Description

Volkswagen is a German multinational automaker founded in 1937 in Germany. Originally known for the iconic Beetle, it is the flagship marque of the VW Group, one of the largest automakers in the world.

History

Founded in 1937 to produce the "People's Car", Volkswagen was synonymous with the iconic VW Beetle. During WWII, it manufactured the Kubelwagen and the amphibious Schwimmwagen.
After the war, Volkswawgen went through a period of hardship and recovered in the 1950s and 1960s. The Volkswagen Type 2, also known as the "Bus" became an icon of the era.
In 1964, Volkswagen acquired Auto Union, which owned the historic Audi brand that had been discontinued after WWII. With the front-wheel drive expertise from Auto Union / Audi, Volkswagen gradually replace the mid- and rear-engined vehicles and adopted the front-engine, front-wheel drive layout. Key models included the Passat, Golf, Polo, and Scirocco.
Thanks to its wide commercial success in China, Volkswagen was able to acquire numerous assets, including SEAT, Bentley, Bugatti, Scania, MAN, and Skoda. It is closely related to Porsche.
