Product Overview

Volkswagen Touareg Mk3 (chassis code CR) is a mid-size crossover in production from 2018. It is available with a range of inline-4, V6, and V8 engines that displaced 2.0 to 4.0 liters.
For the last time, it is possible to acquire the Touareg with a V8 diesel engine. While a far cry from the V10 TDI of yesteryear, this is the ultimate diesel V8 in VW's lineup also found in a range of Porsche and Audi models.
Those who drive offroad, for work or leisure, will appreciate the approach, departure, and breakover angles that the chassis offers. The official fuel economy rating is exceptionally rosy, though it may cast more doubts on the trustworthiness of the regulators and perhaps the owner's own sanity than it relates to reality.
Drivers who appreciate handling will be pleased to know that the Volkswagen Touareg 3 comes with double-wishbone at the front and multi-link at the rear.

The Touareg R gets 22in wheels as standard, as well as the obligatory racy-looking bumpers, sills, air intakes and roof spoiler. But under the bonnet, the car has less to pique your interest. It’s powered by the same pairing of 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 engine and 134bhp electric motor as has driven the Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid.

Pros
  • Comfortable to drive

Cons

wheel drive system can send up to 70% of drive forwards and 80% rearwards. Unlike in some rivals, notably the Cayenne, there's no torque vectoring capability across the rear axle. VW says the Touareg’s existing chassis trickery means it simply doesn’t need it. A 3.5-tonne towing capacity, incidentally, marks the big touareg out among other premium SUVs.

Pros
  • Powerful V6 engines
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Decent off-road performance
Cons
  • No torque vectoring

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
The 3.0-litre V6 is familiar from other big Volkswagen Group SUVs using the MLB Evo platform, including Audi’s Q7 and Q8 and the Porsche Cayenne. It's a potent engine, producing 335bhp and 332lb ft, and drive is sent to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic gearbox. The official WLTP combined figure of 25.6mpg is at least a pretty accurate reflection of what you can expect on a longer run.

The Touareg is a five-seater with a boot that’ll swallow up to 810 litres of cargo. It has plenty of room even for larger adults in both rows, and up front the cabin looks and feels solid, classy and expensively hewn. It's luxurious without being lavish or ornate, as modern Volkswagens tend to be.

As spacious and functional as ever, with loads of front and rear passenger space and a capacious, family-friendly 810-litre boot. The Innovision Cockpit has been done away with, too, so instead of a 15in infotainment touchscreen and 12in digital instrument display, you get a 9.2in touchscreen and analogue dials. At £45,445, it’s some £8000 cheaper than a basic XC90 and nearly £11,000 less than an entry level Audi Q7.

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
VW’s 282bhp V6 TDI motor suits the Touareg very well indeed. Front seats are superb: adjustable via the touchscreen for cushion length, lumbar support, and for the specific amount of lateral support you get around your thighs and abdomen. Wind intrusion is really well suppressed for such a tall car and mechanical isolation is excellent. Rolling refinement is good on well-sealed roads, but those 21in wheels can make for a noisier ride on coarser Tarmac and they can thump just a little over raised edges.

The Touareg has the unusual quality of modesty in its make-up. There’s no excess of showiness beyond a somewhat naively styled gap-toothed grille. The V6 is quiet at idle and torquey and relaxed low in the rev range. For many (well-heeled) people, this is surely the perfect family car.

Five-door Volkswagen Touareg is a big, comfortable and super-practical family car. While it doesn't offer a seven-seat layout, it is still an incredibly spacious SUV with room for five tall adults. It's almost five metres long and 1,984mm wide, which is 44mm wider than before. Despite being 7mm lower than before, there's loads of headroom and kneeroom.

Touareg rides on the VW Group MLBevo platform - the same that's used for not just the Audi Q7, but also the Bentley Bentayga and the Lamborghini Urus. Air suspension, four-wheel steering and active anti-roll bars are all on the options list. All three trim levels get adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition and leather seats as standard. VW's flagship Touareg R feels like neither a sporty SUV nor a relaxed, refined plug-in. The X5 offers more range and better efficiency, greater refinement and comfort at a more affordable price. The tech is good and it'll be cheaper to run than an ICE SUV, but it's pricey and you'll have to work to see the benefits.
