Product Overview

Volkswagen Passat B8 facelift is a mid-size sedan in production from 2019 to 2022. It was available with a range of inline-4 engines that displaced 1.4 to 2.0 liters.
Compared to the pre-facelift model, the facelifted B8 differs only in minor cosmetic updates. The engines also conform to the latest Euro emission standards.
The official fuel economy rating of the pHEV is exceptionally rosy, though it may cast more doubts on the trustworthiness of the regulators and perhaps the owner's own sanity than it relates to reality.
Drivers who appreciate handling should keep in mind that the Volkswagen Passat uses MacPherson front suspension, which doesn't provide the best cornering performance.

External Reviews

autocar[1]

Reviewer score 65% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from autocar have found:
Handsome, yes, and with an appealing sense of well-to-do-ness about its sensible proportions, but exciting? Nah, not really. Provided there's enough charge in the battery, step-off is impeccably smooth. You roll forward on a gentle wave of initial electric torque and, provided you don't pin the throttle, can continue to waft along in silence right up to 87mph.
Pros
  • Impressive powertrain
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • Expensive for what it offers
  • Not particularly stimulating to drive

autoexpress[2]

Reviewer score 77% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from autoexpress have found:
The Volkswagen Passat saloon and Passat Estate are the longest lived models in the VW line-up. They've been for sale since 1972, so pre-date the Golf by a couple of years. The current B8-generation version has been on sale since 2015, with a facelift arriving in 2019. It's got the quality, refinement and technology to compete with the best, even if it lacks the badge prestige.
Pros
  • Cheap to buy
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Decent infotainment tech
Cons
  • Lack of refinement

carmagazine[3]

Reviewer score 66% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from carmagazine have found:
The 2.0-litre TSI with 187bhp and the updated GTE plug-in with a combined output of 215bhp. The GTE has been updated with a new battery pack after the old one went off sale. New Travel Assist system, standard-fit on all Passats and incorporating a new version of the firm's adaptive cruise control system that now also features the ability to read road signs.
Pros
  • Gorgeous interior
  • Excellent infotainment system
  • Good standard equipment
Cons
  • Slightly fidgety ride
  • Lack of standard equipment

cnet[4]

Reviewer score 47% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from cnet have found:
VW says that pretty much all of the sheetmetal below the roof has been reshaped. The new look adds about 1.7 inches of length and about 50 to 80 pounds to the curb weight. Most of the safety technology is largely unchanged from the previous generation. The power delivery is OK and the ride is comfortable enough.
Pros
  • Better value than its predecessor
  • Improved infotainment system
Cons
  • Lackluster cabin tech
  • Lacks Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and MirrorLink
  • No digital Cockpit
