History
Dr.-Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG is a German automaker of high-performance sports cars, sedans, and crossover SUVs. It is currently under the ownership of Volkswagen AG.
History
Founded in 1931, the company initially offered vehicle development and consulting services. One of the first assignment resulted in the Volkswagen Beetle. The first Porsche vehicle was developed in 1939 as Porsche 64.
After WWII, Ferdinand Porsche lost his position as Chairman of Volkswagen. As he was arrested for war crimes, his son Ferry Porsche founded Porsche Konstruktionen GesmbH which produced the Porsche 356. In 1950, production of the 356 was taken over by Dr.-Ing. h.c. F. Porsche GmbH.
In 1964, Porsche launched the company's most iconic model, the 911: Like the 356, it was air-cooled and rear-engined. Unlike it, the boxer engine now has six cylinders. Originally, the vehicle was intended to be "901", but Peugeot had trademarks on all x0x names.
In 2002, Porsche introduced the crossover SUV Cayenne amid controversies amongst 911 owners, though the vehicle is a commercial success that has led other manufacturers, particularly German automakers, to commit broadly to crossovers.
