History
Cadillac is a division of General Motors (GM) that designs and manufactures luxury vehicles founded in 1902. One of the most storied car makers in the world, Cadillac had for decades been the premier luxury brand in the automotive industry. In recent decades, it has reinvented itself with a sportier and more SUV-focused lineup to accommodate a broader, younger customer base.
Major markets of Cadillac include North America and China, though Cadillac vehicles are sold in over three dozen markets worldwide.
History
Before WWII, Cadillac established itself as the "Standard of the World", pioneering with the cross-plane V8 engine in 1918, the "clashless" Synchro-Mesh Silent-Shift transmission in 1929, and the world's first V16 engine in 1930.
Postwar Cadillac vehicles led with a flamboyant style synonymous with American automobile of the 1950s, reflecting the optimism of the era. Wide applications of chromes and large tail fins were signature design elements. They reached their pinnacle of popularity and commercial success in the 1960s and early 1970s.
Following the oil crisis, downsizing took place and the brand suffered.
Current Lineup
In recent years, the success of Cadillac premium SUVs and crossovers, chiefly the Escalade and the SRX (currently XT5) have revived the marque. Unlike Cadillac vehicles of yesteryear, the current Cadillac lineup is filled with SUVs and crossovers of all sizes.
