Product Overview

The 7th-generation S-Class (W223 / V223) is the latest flagship luxury sedan in the model lineup of Mercedes. Based on the 2nd-gen modular MRA platform, the new S-Class is marginally larger than its predecessor. Air suspension is standard, while the new E-Active Body Control replaces the Magic Body Control found in earlier models.
An evolution rather than revolution design-wise, the W223 adopts design elements that have emerged in Mercedes' vehicle lineup since the launch of the W222. Inside, Mercedes has prioritized technology in this update. The 2nd-gen Mercedes-Benz Experience (MBUX) dominates the experience, with a 12.3-inch instrument cluster and an optional 12.8-inch OLED center display.
Further novelties include the rear-wheel steering that is able to turn the rear wheels to a maximum of 10 degrees, rear-seat airbags, and a head-up display with augmented reality navigation. The headlights can project symbols on the road to warn the driver of incoming obstacles.
At launch, only six-cylinder models are available. More powertrain configurations are expected in 2021.

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
The S500 4Matic adopts the latest in Mercedes’ EQ Boost mild-hybrid technology. There are four different driving modes: Eco, Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus. An additional Individual mode allows you to tailor the characteristics of the steering, throttle and damping to your liking. The S500 is quick, too, sprinting effortlessly to three-figure speeds.

Pros
  • Powerful V8 engine
  • Impressive range-topping performance
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • Lacklustre gearbox

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
Mercedes’ 2.9-litre turbocharged diesel 400d engine is a good fit for the S-Class. It proves torquey, quiet (except when working hard at revs) and real-world frugal. All it lacks is much in the way of alluring audible charm. Pedal response is ever gentle and progressive, and the car’s outright performance level greater than most will regularly tap. Handling is secure, contained and very predictable.

Pros
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Decent infotainment system
Cons
  • Lacklustre on-board refinement
  • Not the most comfortable to drive

S 350d AMG Line will be the first car available with Level 3 autonomous driving capability when law allows in certain markets next year. The S-Class handles surprisingly tidily for such a big car, with precise steering and minimal body roll. The real star of the cabin is the huge, high-resolution OLED centre touchscreen that comes with the latest MBUX infotainment software.

Pros
  • Incredibly quiet
  • Impressive infotainment system
Cons
  • Lack of standard four-wheel steering

There's a new 12.8-inch touchscreen with fingerprint recognition. The 12.3-inch driver display is available with 3D tech and it'll watch you, too, so you only have to look at the door mirror you want to adjust. The car will also recommend a driving position. The latest MBUX infotainment features augmented reality for the nav.

Pros
  • Fantastic infotainment tech
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • Lacklustre ride quality
  • No 3D TV

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz S580 starts at $117,350. Under the hood is a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 producing 496 horsepower. This may be the final generation of the combustion-powered S-Class. The S580 is bound to be a road trip king for those thrones alone.
