Product Overview

Mercedes-Benz S-class W222 is a full-size luxury sedan in production from 2013 to 2017, whereupon it received a facelift. It was available with a range of inline-4, V6, V8, and V12 engines that displaced 2.1 to 6.0 liters.
Styling-wise, the W222 is a mix of the smooth lines of W220 and the presence of the W221. It has been loved by automotive journalists and influencers alike. Some old-school enthusiasts, however, find the W222 a little generic, especially in contrast to the distinctly S-class W221. Indeed, it is usually difficult to tell the W222 S-class apart from its lesser stablemates.
With diesel finally falling out of favor in the EU, Mercedes offered a single OM642 V6 diesel engine in S350d guise. This is probably the one would find as taxis in major Western European cities. V6-wise, the terrible M272 was discontinued in favor of the M276, which already appeared towards the end of W221's production run. It has proven to be a much better engine, though its production run has since been cut short.
The other notable update was on the venerable bi-turbo V12, which traces its roots back to the horrible M137 but has been in the M275 form since 2002. After over a decade, Mercedes finally tweaked some things: The troubled ignition coil pack with 12 coils bundled together for each engine bank was replaced by a more rational per-cylinder ignition coil pack. Mercedes also added slightly larger turbochargers, even though the output levels remained largely the same. All these changes make the M279 more stout and reliable than before. The result is the final iteration of Mercedes' V12, the M279.
Drivers who appreciate handling will be pleased to know that the W222 S-class comes with multi-link suspensions at all four corners.
