Xiaomi recently unveiled its latest release of Android-based MIUI 12 operating system for smartphones. It offers a range of bottom-up optimizations and features, including privacy-protection features, and packs them in a brand-new UI design that combines the best of Android and iOS.

Privacy Protection

MIUI 12 gives the user stronger and more detailed control over permissions granted to individual apps. Building on Android's permission control over location, MIUI 12 further manages the permission to access location data for individual apps. Additionally, permissions to access camera, microphone, contacts, call history, calendar, and storage are only allowed under "While using the app" mode.
MIUI 12 also can also protect the user's privacy by removing location information and metadata when sharing photos, if the user so chooses.

New User Interface

MIUI 12 brings a revamped UI design with new system animations. Powered by the Mi Physics Engine, the elegant motion of icons simulates a 3D curve that resembles real-life motion trajectory. Every detail reflects the design language inspired by nature.

Functional Improvements

MIUI 12 features a host of functional improvements. The introduction of Global Floating Windows transforms multitasking. Floating windows can be easily moved, closed, and resized by simple gestures. They make multitasking on mobile devices an effortless experience.
The new Screen Casting functionality allows the user to turn their Xiaomi devices to a presentation swiss knife. Not only can the user cast documents, apps, videos, and games with a single tap, multitasking is also available. It is also possible to cast the screen with the display off and to hide private items when casting.
MIUI 12 also features a new Dark Mode. With a darker color palette, the Dark Mode transforms the user experience in low-light environments.
Last but not least, the Poco Launcher App Drawer has come to MIUI 12. When turned on, it makes the Home screen cleaner by organizing the apps in it.

Availability

Initial rollout will start from June 2020 for Mi 9, Mi 9T, Mi 9T Pro, Redmi K20, and Redmi K20 Pro. Other models that will progressively received the update include most contemporary Xiaomi Mi, Redmi, and Pocophone models.
