For the 17th Year Running, Canon Holds the Number One Market Share in the Global Interchangeable-Lens Digital Camera Market
For 17 consecutive years from 2003 to 2019, Canon has maintained the number one share of the global market for interchangeable-lens digital cameras.
Canon's EOS series of interchangeable-lens DSLRs and mirrorless cameras span from high-performance flagship models highly trusted by professionals to entry-level models that allow users to enjoy quality stills and video shooting with ease. Canon develops all key components featured in these cameras, from CMOS image sensors to image processors and interchangeable lenses, under the core concept of Speed, Comfort, and High Image Quality.
History: From Digital SLRs to Mirrorless
In September 2003, Canon introduced the highly-popular EOS Digital Rebel. Competitively-priced, this lightweight and compact camera captured the market swiftly and set the path for Canon's growth in the DSLR market for years to come. From the professional EOS 1D and 5D series to consumer-oriented Rebel series, Canon never stops innovating. Its professional DSLRs paved the way for SLR video recording that is a must in today's digital cameras.
In October 2018, Canon expanded its lineup with the new EOS R mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera system. EOS R and RP full-frame mirrorless cameras and RF-mount lenses fully leverage Canon's camera- and optical-know-how. The EF-EOS R adapter allows users to mount any of the numerous EF-mount lens to the new EOS R series MILCs and to use them to their full abilities.
Future: Commitment to Both
Canon is currently developing the EOS R5 full-frame mirrorless camera that is slotted to be the D5's RF counterpart. It has announced that the EOS R5 will support, among others, 8K video recording. Seven RF-mount lenses and two RF range extenders are concurrently under development and will be released throughout the course of 2020.
Meanwhile, Canon will continue to expand its EOS system digital SLRs. In the beginning of 2020, it has announced the flagship EOS 1DX Mark III with industry-leading 20 fps burst rates achievable with both mechanical and electronic shutters.
