Full-Frame CameraProduct Gallery
Product Overview
The Canon EOS R5 is the company's new flagship full-frame professional camera in the RF-mount MILC system with a host of advanced features:
- As an industry-first, the Canon R5 supports internal video recording of 8K video at 30p or 4K at 120p in 4:2:2 10-bit using Canon Log or HDR PQ with H.265 encoding. It can also record 8K 30p in RAW. The R5 is able to record with the full-width of the sensor, with no crop.
- It can capture at 20 fps with electronic shutter or 12 fps with mechanical shutter in continuous shooting.
- It offers two memory card slots, unlike the single-card EOS R, with one CFexpress and one SD (UHS-II).
- EOS R5 has the improved Dual Pixel autofocus that covers 100% of the frame and that that supports advanced object detection from the EOS-1DX Mark III. Not only is Face, Head, and Eye tracking supported, for the first time Canon will support Animal detection.

External Reviews
cameralabs[1]
Reviewer score 88% (normalized by Neofiliac)Like all recent Canon cameras, the R5 can effectively tag images with location information via a smartphone that’s linked by Bluetooth. Once setup, the process happens seamlessly and without further interaction, automatically embedding the location provided by your phone. The R5 also includes a Multiple Exposure mode with up to nine frames, in-camera HDR with a variety of effects, focus bracketing for up to 999 shots.
Pros
- Fantastic handling
- Excellent image quality
- Excellent battery life
Cons
- Can’t be used in full-frame mode
- No wireless charging
digitalpicture[2]
Reviewer score 87% (normalized by Neofiliac)The EOS R5 enters the market as the highest-priced Canon mirrorless interchangeable lens camera ever. The provided set of controls and user interface make the R5 very easy to use, with a grip design that makes long-term use comfortable. The autofocus performance of this camera, especially eye detection AF, is incredible.
Pros
- Sharp, ultra-high resolution image quality with excellent dynamic range (exposure latitude)
- Excellent autofocus performance with eye detection AF
- Excellent battery life
Cons
- Fingerprint sensor not compatible with RF mount
digitaltrends[3]
Reviewer score 87% (normalized by Neofiliac)The EOS R5's 45MP chip is a definite improvement, especially as you turn up the ISO. ISO range is an impressive 100-51,200, expandable a stop further to 102,400. At 470 megabits per second, there is plenty of data in the all-intraframe (ALL-I) compression.
Pros
- Excellent image quality
- High-resolution video
- Dual memory card slots
- Excellent battery life
Cons
- High-ISO banding
- High price
gizmodo[4]
Reviewer score 44% (normalized by Neofiliac)The EOS R5's overheating issues are mind-bogglingly bad. It takes upwards of an hour until it's fully back to normal and you can shoot more than a minute or two of video again. Changing between video modes (HQ, high-speed, C-Log, etc.) is unintuitive.
Pros
- Beautiful 8K and HQ 4K video
- Very affordable
- Very good battery life
Cons
- Can’t be relied on to produce high-quality 8K footage
- No dynamic range
- No 4K or HDR support
pcmag[5]
Reviewer score 70% (normalized by Neofiliac)The EOS R5 is a statement from Canon. It's intended to compel 5D owners to jump to a new lens system. There's no wanting for quality, and it benefits from speedy autofocus. But recording limits are real, and recovery times are frustrating.
Pros
- Superlative 4K video
- Fast autofocus
- 5-axis IBIS
- 4K recording
Cons
- Shorter recovery time than competitors
- Can't roll at 1080p
techradar[6]
Reviewer score 89% (normalized by Neofiliac)The EOS R5 will shoot 12fps using the mechanical shutter, or up to 20 with the electronic shutter. The combination of stabilized RF-mount lenses and the in-camera IBIS ensures that, if you tread softly enough, you can create reasonably smooth tracking shots. Video performance is gorgeously sharp and the LOG files we shot were incredibly flexible when it came to grading.
Pros
- Incredible image quality
- Excellent battery life
- Impressive electronic shutter
Cons
- No manual focus
