Canon Wins Six EISA Awards for Its RF- & EF-mount Cameras & Lenses
Canon has long been the leader in digital photography, even though Sony has in recent years solidified itself in the mirrorless space. This year, launches of numerous innovative cameras and lenses in the new RF full-frame mirrorless system has narrowed the gap between the two.
This week, Expert Imaging and Sound Association (EISA) has announced winners for its coveted annual photography awards. Canon has seized six wins for its cameras and lenses.
EOS R5
Canon EOS R5 is the first mirrorless camera capable of recording 8K video, including that in RAW format internally or externally via HDMI. It also promises 4K 120p video and stills shooting at up to 20fps with the electronic shutter, producing detailed 45MP images.
The first Canon digital camera body to feature in-body image stabilization, the EOS R5 leapfrogs the competition and promises the best stabilization results up to 8 stops. With a high-resolution electronic viewfinder, articulated rear screen and professional-level controls, it is a compelling proposition for hybrid shooters. It has won the EISA 2020-2021 Camera Innovation Award.
EOS-1D X Mark III
Canon EOS-1D X Mark III is the company's flagship professional DSLR specifically designed for news agencies and sports photographers. Its latest 191-point autofocus system delivers the fastest AF performance and the highest continuous burst rate (16fps) of any DSLR on the market today.
Despite having a mirror, the 1DX Mark III is equally competent as a mirrorless camera, offering 20fps in this mode. This is all thanks to Canon's Dual-Pixel autofocus system, which also ensures superior video AF performance. The EOS-1D X Mark III is capable of recording 5.5K video internally in 12-bit RAW. It has won the EISA 2020-2021 Professional Camera Award.
RF 70-200mm F2.8L IS USM
Canon RF 70-200mm F2.8L IS USM is the company's professional telephoto zoom lens for the new RF-mount MILC system. Tailored to the new mirrorless cameras, this lens features a new optical design that delivers impressive image quality despite its compact construction.
An external zoom lens, which is a departure from its EF-mount predecessors, the RF 70-200mm F2.8L IS USM is well sealed against dust and splashes to the same professional standards. In addition, it offers very effective 5-stop image stabilisation. For these reasons, it was named EISA 2020-2021 Lens of the Year.
RF 24-70mm F2.8L IS USM
Canon RF 24-70mm F2.8L IS USM is a sibling of the RF 70-200mm F2.8L. It is the workhorse standard zoom lens for professional photographers. With its bright f/2.8 maximum aperture and built-in 5-stop image stabilization, the RF 24-70mm F2.8L IS USM is easy to use.
Advantages of the RF mirrorless sytem, combined with a new optical design, mean that the RF 24-70mm F2.8L IS USM delivers excellent image quality across the zoom range. It is also capable of smooth, silent, and fast autofocus, perfect for both stills and videos. Like all Canon professional lenses, the RF 24-70mm F2.8L enjoys robust, weather-sealed build quality along with fluorine coating on the front and rear elements to protect them against water and grease. It is named EISA 2020-2021 Standard Zoom Lens of the Year.
RF 600mm & 800mm F11 IS STM
Canon's two latest super-telephoto lenses offer extreme reach at surprisingly low weight and compact sizes, thanks to a novel design that combines diffractive optics with a small, fixed aperture, and to a retractable sliding barrel that enables a remarkably short packed length. The inclusion of optical stabilization means that, despite the small apertures, these lenses can be used handheld.
These new features together offer portability, affordability, and reach for full-frame photographers that were previously only available with cropped-sensor cameras. The two lenses together won the EISA 2020-2021 Lens Innovation Award.
EOS 90D
To round up the list, Canon's latest APS-C DSLR EOS 90D offers full-frame-like features at a more affordable price point. Its 32.5MP sensor sets a new resolution record for APS-C, while the Dual Pixel CMOS AF ensures fast and precise focusing in live view and video. The EOS 90D records 4K video without crop and FHD at up to 120fps.
Like the EOS-1D X Mark III, the EOS 90D is also an excellent mirrorless camera, with an electronic shutter that is able to manage short exposures down up 1/16,000 sec. It has won the EISA 2020-2021 APS-C Camera Award.
EISA is a collaboration between different multimedia magazines. Each year, it awards new products launched during the preceding months in HiFi, video, photography, and mobile devices. The list of winners in 2020-2021 are organized in six "Expert Groups".
