Product Overview

The Canon RF 800mm F11 IS STM lens is a lightweight fixed focal-length super-telephoto in the company's RF-mount MILC system. Like its sibling, the RF 600mm F11 IS STM, the lens can be collapsed and locked in place for storage and transport, making it exceptionally compact for its focal length.
Thanks to its Diffractive Optics technology, the RF 800mm F11 IS STM has few lens elements and is much more affordable. As a tradeoff, the lens lacks operable aperture blades, with the aperture fixed at f/11. The RF 800mm also features a customizable control ring common in Canon's new RF lens lineup.

cameralabs[1]

Reviewer score 73% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from cameralabs have found:
The Canon RF 600mm and 800mm f11 are relatively light and affordable super-telephoto lenses for the full-frame EOS R mirrorless system. Both lenses proved remarkably usable, successfully tracking birds in flight and various sports in good to fair conditions. The f11 aperture does however prove limiting at dus or in shaded areas, inevitably bumping you up to the highest sensitivities.
Pros
  • Light and compact
  • Good image quality
  • Good battery life
Cons
  • F11 aperture is limiting at dus or in shaded areas

digitalpicture[2]

Reviewer score 76% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from digitalpicture have found:
The Canon RF 800mm F11 IS STM Lens is compatible with all Canon EOS R series cameras. While this lens is not a high-end professional lens, it is hard to argue that the RF 800 is a good value. The RF 800 and RF 600, each with a camera mounted, fit comfortably together in the relatively small MindShift Gear BackLight 26L.
Pros
  • Compact, ultra-light, and compact
  • Excellent image stabilization
  • Easy to use
Cons
  • Large lens hood
  • No lens case included

pcmag[3]

Reviewer score 66% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from pcmag have found:
Canon's RF 800mm F11 IS STM is a $900 prime that nets the same angle of view as high-end lenses that cost thousands more. It nets about 2,750 lines of resolution in the central area of the frame, producing softer details when compared with the RF 600mm (3,500 lines) The lens is able to net blur-free shots at handheld speeds as long as 1/30-second in our testing.
Pros
  • 1:7.1 autofocus
  • 1:3 macro focus
  • Optical stabilization
Cons
  • Small focal length
  • No adjustable aperture
