Est. 1917 in Japan
History
Nikon is a Japanest multinational corporation specializing in optics and imaging products. It is best known for its cameras, camera lenses, and binoculars, though Nikon is also one of the world's largest manufacturer of steppers for photo-lithography in semiconductor fabrication.
History
Founded in 1917 via a merger of three leading optical manufacturers, Nikon has always been a leader in optics and optical equipment such as binoculars and microscopes in the Japanese market.
After WWII, Nikon produced rangefinder cameras that were essentially imitations of Leica cameras of the time. In 1959, however, the successful launch of the Nikon F-series single-lens reflex (SLR) cameras quickly established Nikon as a favorite among professional photographers.
In the 1980s and 1990s, Nikon lagged behind in autofocus capabilities. The decision to retain the F-mount and compatibility with lenses dated from the 1950s continued to pose difficulties.
Current Products
Nevertheless, Nikon enjoyed broad success as digital imaging come along. Its digital SLRs are widely popular and consistently ranked 2nd in market share, after Canon. Its compact camera business is especially successful.
In 2018, Nikon introduced its first mirrorless Z-series cameras, the Z6 and the Z7. They mark a departure from the F-mount dating back to 1959.
While best known for its cameras, Nikon is also a major player in industrial applications.
Nikon is part of the Mitsubishi group of companies (keiretsu).
