Kia has revealed more details of its new intelligent Manual Transmission (iMT) designed for future mild-hybrid vehicles. The iMT features a clutch-by-wire system that enables in-gear coasting and start-stop for enhanced efficiency.
How Does It Work?
Instead of a mechanical linkage from the clutch pedal, the iMT's clutch is operated electronically in the 48-volt electrical system. Together with the mild-hybrid starter-generator (MHSG), the iMT allows engine to be switched off when coasting to a halt. This improves fuel efficiency and emissions by 3% in real-world conditions.

Since the iMT disengaged the clutch, the chosen gear remains engaged with the engine off. The engine restarts in the same gear as soon as the driver presses either the brake or accelerator pedal, thanks to the MHSG. If the vehicle speed is too low for the selected gear, the iMT keeps the clutch disengaged to avoid stalling the engine.

Applications
Mild-hybrid vehicles from the Hyundai Motor Group (Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis) will gradually start offering iMT in 2020.
