History
Kia Motors Corporation is a South Korean multinational automaker. The name Kia means "Rising from Asia". As of 2015, it is minority owned by Hyundai; in turn, Kia is a minority owner of over twenty Hyundai subsidiaries.
History
Founded in 1944 as a manufacturer of steel tubing and bicycle parts, Kia produced Korea's first domestic bicycle in 1951. In 1952, it adopted the "Kia" name and built Honda-licensed small motorcycles and Mazda-licensed trucks and cars.
During the Asian financial crisis, Kia declared bankruptcy in 1997 and reached an agreement with Hyundai the next year. Since 2005, Kia has focused on the European market.
