On the outside, Audi has given the new A3 Sportback the latest LED lighting solutions that bestow an intensely modern feel. Inside, the use of quality materials, including seat upholstery made of recycled PET bottles and adorned with contrast stitching completes the tech-filled aura that Audi strives for.

The infotainment system is more connected than ever, with broad range of support for digital media and applications. Via the Audi connect key, owners can lock and unlock their vehicle and start the engine with their Android smartphone and Amazon Alexa.

The 4th-gen Audi A3 Sportback also features more efficient engines coupled with Audi's proven 7-speed S-tronic double clutch transmission or a 6-speed manual. These drivetrains cut down emissions while retaining the performance that Audi owners have come to expect.

The A3 looks smart, has a practical interior, offers decent performance and manages stable, secure dynamics. The 2.0-litre engine isn’t RDE2-compliant, so it gets slapped with a 4% benefit-in-kind surcharge when diesel versions of the BMW 1 Series and Mercedes A-Class don't. But there’s enough to like about the A3 to make it recommendable.

From launch, one of the more popular options is likely to be the car driven here, the 35 TFSI. It uses the VW Group's 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine, developing 148bhp and 250Nm torque. As ever, a sporty S3 version is also available, and an RS 3 with a five-cylinder engine will arrive in 2021.

The TFSIe 40 is a plug-in hybrid version of Audi's popular and premium A3. It has a 1.4-litre petrol engine and an electric motor. Official electric range is 40 miles, but take that with a pinch of salt. Infotainment is brilliant, and comes with a 10.25-inch or 12.3-inch screen. But the loss of boot space really hampers everyday practicality.

Lamborghini-inspired design, super-advanced tech, and a luxury interior. Its traditional alternatives are the BMW 1 Series and Mercedes A-Class. But the A3 actually shares plenty of parts with the new VW Golf, SEAT Leon and Skoda Octavia. It won the Best Family Car award in the 2021 carwow Car of the Year Awards.

The Meitner MA3 is one of the finest DACs at its price. It offers a taste of the best high-end designs in a slightly slightly opulent and flexible package. The DAC is great at tracking the dynamics of a recording, too. The vocals on 'Wake Up' sounded expressive and lucid.
