Product Overview

Mercedes-Benz GLE W167 is a mid-size crossover in production from 2019. It is available with a range of inline-4, inline-6, and V8 engines that displaced 1.9 to 4.0 liters.
Compared to its predecessor, the W167 has a more athletic exterior styling and somewhat more interesting ICE engine lineup, including the superb M177 and the interesting M256 / OM656.
Those who drive offroad, for work or leisure, will appreciate the approach, departure, and breakover angles that the chassis offers. The official fuel economy rating is exceptionally rosy, though it may cast more doubts on the trustworthiness of the regulators and perhaps the owner's own sanity than it relates to reality. Utility-minded owners will love the 2055L (73cu-ft) cargo space. The Mercedes-Benz GLE also comes with a high towing capacity.

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
The Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 is the second-generation high-performance SUV coupé. The car is AMG-ised via a toothy 'Panamericana' grille, bonnet power bulges, different bumpers and a big rear diffuser. The interior is plush and well lined with brightwork, with special AMG graphics for the steering wheel and sophisticated, screen-based instrumentation.

Pros
  • Gorgeous looks
  • Excellent infotainment system
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • Lack of refinement

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
Mercedes-AMG has embraced the growing trend for super-SUVs. The GLE 63 S is the only version of the model offered in the UK. It has been armed with a 22bhp electric motor to cope with GLE's near-two-and-a-half tonne kerb weight. It's ridiculously powerful and quick for a machine of its size.

Pros
  • Superb power for a small SUV
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • No eco-warrior
  • Not cheap

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
Step-off is generally smooth provided you don't have all the delicacy of an elephant. The nine-speed ‘box can be a touch difficult to get along with at times. The cabin is impressively roomy, and for the most part well finished. The square air vents in the centre of the dash are a smart new design touch.

Pros
  • Sophisticated air suspension
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • Uncomfortable to ride
  • Not the most fun to drive

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
Of the 10 SUVs Mercedes currently offers, it and the GLE Coupé sit around seventh and eighth in the size rankings, below only the GLS and G-Class. Running on electric only, this relatively big battery gives more than a token range, at 61.5 miles officially. It can charge at up to 22kW, which replenishes the battery in an hour.

Pros
  • Fantastic infotainment system
  • Lots of fun to drive
Cons
  • No true one-pedal driving

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
The new Mercedes-Benz GLE 350de is well worth considering if you’re in the market for a luxury SUV, especially if you spend a good part of your time on urban roads. With a claimed 62 mile electric range and markedly improved regeneration qualities, most commutes can be achieved on battery energy stores alone. The added weight brought on by its complex driveline has robbed the suspension of some of its compliance. However, with Mercedes' latest air spring technology, the car still manages to deliver a quiet and cosseting ride that suites its interior ambience.

Pros
  • Powerful electric motor
  • Excellent infotainment
  • Decent ride quality
Cons
  • Expensive for what it offers
  • High CO2 emissions

The GLE 400d uses a 2.9-litre straight-six turbodiesel producing 325bhp and a hefty 516lb ft. This new GLE is longer, wider and lower than the car before it and comes with the option of seven seats for the first time. It's also a technological tour-de-force, with a high-tech, high-quality interior and just one trim 'option': AMG Line.

Pros
  • Powerful engine
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • No E-Active suspension
  • Lacklustre ride quality

Mercedes has improved its best-selling SUV, with a subtle but effective styling makeover and what we believe to be the best interior in its class. AMG Line is the only trim available in the UK, and while this makes it an attractive prospect, it also means that it's an expensive car to buy. Seven seats are standard on all but the entry-level model, while all models are fitted with four-wheel drive and a smooth nine-speed automatic transmission.

Pros
  • Impressive cabin quality
  • Impressive infotainment tech
Cons
  • Expensive to run
  • Alternatives are more fun to drive

Standard kit includes 20-inch alloys, LED headlights, blind spot and traffic sign assist. MBUX system consists of a pair of 12.3-inch displays mounted side-by-side. Main screen is touch-sensitive, although it can still be controlled through conventional buttons, or a slightly fiddly touchpad mounted on the centre console. Forward visibility is hampered by a high dashboard line.

Pros
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Excellent infotainment system
Cons
  • Slippery ride
  • Slow steering response

The GLE 53 uses Mercedes' EQ Boost mild-hybrid tech to improve performance and efficiency. It's a 2,305kg machine, mind, and with ‘only’ 429bhp to shift that bulk you might think the GLE isn't all that rapid. The 0-62mph sprint takes 5.3 seconds, so this seven-seat family SUV can embarrass hot hatchbacks. However, with official fuel consumption of 26.2mpg and CO2 emissions of 248g/km, it's still going to be as pricey to run as it is to buy.

Pros
  • Powerful engine
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Lots of tech
Cons
  • Pricier than rivals
  • No infotainment

For a 2.5-tonne four-wheel drive monster it really shifts. Steering is a little light, even its raciest mode. But dip it into an undulating corner and there's enough feel to guide you round. 48-volt active-roll suspension does its magic to make it feel positively un-boat-like.

Pros
  • Extremely fun to drive
  • Excellent infotainment
Cons
  • Expensive for a four-cylinder

The second-generation Mercedes-Benz GLE starts at £55,685. It will come as standard with seven-seats and Airmatic air suspension. The former two will only cost a few thousand more to buy the base 300 d. The 400 d and plug-in hybrid versions will arrive a few months later. It's a shame that most of the car's potentially life-saving driver-aiding technology is only available as an option.

Pros
  • Powerful engine
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Excellent range
Cons
  • Lack of driver-aiding tech
  • Lacklustre infotainment

The Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 is a high-performance version of the luxurious GLE SUV. It comes with a more powerful engine and a few visual upgrades to help you tell it apart from the standard car. The 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder petrol engine produces 435hp thanks to the help of an electric motor and compact battery pack.

Mercedes-Benz's latest infotainment system stands at the forefront of the GLE350's technological freshening. MBUX has been slowly creeping into every revised Mercedes, and I think it's a fantastic system. Between both rows of seats, there are an impressive five USB-C ports standard.

The GLE450 has a huge list of driving aids, making commutes around San Francisco a breeze. The navigation system features augmented reality with addresses and directions laid directly over the forward-facing camera display. The cabin looks and feels top-notch, with great leathers and a number of different wood and metal inlay options.
