History

Bayerische Motoren Werke AG, BMW, is a Germany multinational company that produces premium automobile and motorcycles. Founded in 1916 as an aircraft engine manufacturer, BMW is one of the largest producer in the luxury / premium segment.

History

Founded in 1916, the company was renamed to BMW in 1922. Its first product was an inline-6 aircraft engine during WWI. After the war, BMW produced industrial products, including a motorcycle that was launched in 1923. In 1928, BMW built its first automobile.
During WWII, BMW manufactured aircraft engines as well as motorcycle and automobiles. Due to its involvement in the war effort, BMW's factories were heavily bombed, and the company was banned from making motor vehicles for years.
BMW resumed motorcycle production in 1948 and car production in 1952. The company went through a renaissance in the 1970s and 1980s. In the 1990s, it purchased the Rover Group, from which it still retains the Mini brand, and the rights to the Rolls Royce brand.
