Product Overview

Audi Q8 F1 (Type 4M) is a large crossover in production from 2018. It is available with a range of V6 engines that displaced 3.0 liters.
Built on Volkswagen's MLB Evo platform, the Q8 is the cheaper alternative to the Porsche Cayenne and Lamborghini Urus, though it is more expensive and less practical than the Q7.
The Audi Q8 is limited to V6 engine, which requires an additional balance shaft and produces neither good sound, good torque, or good power response. The official fuel economy rating is exceptionally rosy, though it may cast more doubts on the trustworthiness of the regulators and perhaps the owner's own sanity than it relates to reality.
Drivers who appreciate handling will be pleased to know that the Audi Q8 comes with multi-link suspensions at all four corners. Another negative is the large 13.3m (43.6ft) turning circle.
Audi has also introduced the plug-in hybrid models 55 and 60 TFSI e at the end of the 2020 for the 2021 model year.

The Q8 has the capacity to be almost as smooth, comfortable and easy-going as its Q7 sibling. In Dynamic mode, the car’s steering takes on plenty of weight, its suspension firms up to a taut but not bothersome level. The car changes direction keenly, and although it doesn’t swivel underneath you like the Cayenne can, it has the abundant lateral grip and mid-corner stability you expect of a fast Audi.

The Q8 is based on the same MLB Evo architecture that underpins the Porsche Cayenne, Volkswagen Touareg and, of course, the Audi Q7. The 282bhp 3.0-litre diesel V6, designated 50 TDI, remains the only engine presently available to order with this £65,040 Audi. At least until the 335bhp petrol V6 will arrive early next year.

Pros
  • Powerful engine

The Q8 60 TFSIe Quattro Competition is a plug-in hybrid version of Audi’s flagship SUV. Instead of buying a conventional V6 petrol engine, you’re committing (for more money) to a powertrain whose main virtue is a 22-to-27-mile electric-only range. This is the seventh modern Audi PHEV to be offered in the UK.

The big Audi is a sister model to the Q7 off-roader, and shares its underpinnings. The sleek body is lower, wider and shorter than its more practical stablemate. There's a diesel mild-hybrid and petrol engine available at present, but more engines are to come. All Q8s feature quattro four-wheel drive, along with an eight-speed auto gearbox.

Cons

  • No third row of seats

Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
The Q8 is a new flagship for the German brand, positioned above the Q7 as a more stylish and desirable choice. The design centres around the crisp-looking new MMI Touch dual-screen infotainment system, again found elsewhere in the upper echelons of Audi's range. There's plenty of room up front for driver and passenger, and even rear occupants aren't penalised too much by the pert back end.

Pros
  • Gorgeous looks
  • Excellent infotainment system
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • Ridiculously brittle ride
  • No third row option

autoexpress[6]

Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
's no loss of refinement. However, when on a motorway the Cayenne is a little louder inside than the Q8 due to tyre roar. For all this performance and driver appeal, you might think the Porsche sacrifices ride comfort. While the ride isn't perfect, it's smoother more of the time than both of its rivals here.

The 55 TFSI e has a 17.9kWh battery and a top speed of 84mph. The 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 makes 335bhp and 450Nm. From a full charge, a 30-mile trip involving plenty of 70mph driving on motorways resulted in 101mpg - and there was still 12 miles of electric range left.

  • Powerful engine

  • Cheap to buy

carmagazine[8]

Reviewer score 78%
Reviewers from carmagazine have found the following***:
The Q8 feels noticeably more agile and positive despite its 2.1-tonne kerbweight (almost 100kg heavier than the Q7) The air suspension deals with all but the worst potholes and bumps with aplomb, only occasionally becoming unsettled as the suspension fails to react in time to large ruts in the road. Legroom is far more generous and is akin to what you get in the back of an A8, while four-zone climate control and heated outer rear seats help keep the back satisfied.

Pros
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Excellent infotainment system
  • Excellent standard equipment
Cons
  • Slightly heavier than Q7

carwow[9]

Reviewer score 89%
Reviewers from carwow have found the following***:
The Audi Q8 is one of the most imposing SUVs on sale. Its huge octagonal grille, piercing two-piece headlights and vast 21-inch alloy wheels make it look more like a naval warship than a Q7. Things feel just as titanic when you step inside. The roof is a little lower than in the Q7, but you won't struggle for headroom unless you're the sort of person who can replace lightbulbs without using a ladder.

Pros
  • Superb looks
  • Superb infotainment system
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • Expensive for what you get
  • Alternatives are more fun to drive

Right now, the Q8 only has one engine on offer, although a hotter SQ8 is likely on the way. The EPA's numbers of 17 miles per gallon city and 22 highway aren't great, but I am able to reach those numbers. Not only is it rewarding to drive, it looks like you're driving the future.

Reviewers from digitaltrends have found the following***:
The Q8 has a combination of power and refinement that makes it easy to reach extralegal speeds. It handles corners better than an SUV without a Porsche badge has any right to. The only blemishes are a ride that's a bit on the choppy side (even in comfort mode), and a too-quiet exhaust.

Reviewer score 72%
Reviewers from topgear have found the following***:
The Q8 disguises its size brilliantly, and has a decent stretch of dynamic change from the seven different – selectable –modes. ‘Comfort’ really is leggier and softer, ‘Dynamic’ noticeably firmer and more responsive with a 40mm drop. There's also an off-road mode, which raises the suspension 50mm from the Comfort/Standard position in case you need to potter down atrack. The seats are excellent front and rear, there's acres of space in the back and a decent boot, ultimate volume slimmed slightly by the beetle back.

  • Comfortable to drive
  • Decent all-wheel drive
  • Lots of tech
Cons
  • Not the most practical
  • Not the best for dog owners
