The A6 is born for straight and true highways. But what about on the pockmarked British B-road? There’s plenty of opportunity to find out in the bucolic Surrey Hills. The supple ride from the adaptive air suspension contributes to the calm. The eight-speed Tiptronic automatic gearbox is a marvel once moving.

Pros
  • Comfortable ride
  • Impressive infotainment system
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • Noisy on B-roads
  • No automatic gearbox

The A6 is finally the true all-rounder its maker intends it to be. In almost every respect it is an improvement on the old car. Charm and character are in short supply here - the Volvo V90 and Jaguar XF serve you better in that respect. But the Audi corners with much more control than the Swede.

Pros
  • Powerful diesel engine
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Decent infotainment system
Cons
  • Lack of refinement

All-new fifth-generation model bundles all the tech, refinement and luxury of the saloon into a more family-friendly estate body. Two trim levels will make up the A6 Avant range in the UK: Sport and S-Line. The 2.0-litre motor is well isolated from the cabin, delivering adequate performance for a family car.

Pros
  • Luxurious interior
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Decent tech
Cons
  • Not as practical as rivals
  • Not the most practical

The A6 follows on from the A8 and A7 in featuring Audi's latest interior ambience, so buttons and knobs have been replaced by a strong, piano black horizontal panel that features an 8.8-inch infotainment screen. There's a 201bhp 2.0-litre diesel badged 40 TDI with two-wheel drive, a 12-volt mild hybrid system and a seven-speed S tronic gearbox, and a 3.0 litre V6 diesel with quattro all- wheel drive. The A6 S-line adds 19-inch wheels, LED lights and departure warning, 19mm drop in height and a 20-inch drop in ride height. An optional Technology Pack gives you a 10-inch upper touchscreen and wireless charging for £1495.

Pros
  • Gorgeous interior
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Excellent infotainment system
Cons
  • V6 feels heavy and cumbersome
  • Lack of four-wheel steering

The E-Class Estate is a classy wagon that's supremely practical. It might be a little more expensive to run, but it's cheaper to buy outright and on PCP finance. The significant boot space advantage means it fulfils its brief better than the Audi. It's marginally less comfortable and not quite as hi-tech here, but this small shortfall is more than made up for in other areas.

Pros
  • Class-leading practicality
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Good standard equipment
Cons
  • Lack of tech as standard

The Audi A6 Avant executive estate has instantly won friends with its looks and ability. The car has already featured in these pages, both in our fleet watch section and as part of a twin test against the Mercedes E-Class Estate. There's 565 litres of boot space even when the rear seats are up. And once you've folded the seats, there's a capacity of 1,680 litres.

Pros
  • Superb looks
  • Impressive infotainment system
  • Superb low-down torque
Cons
  • Not available to buy right now

The Audi A6 Avant is 4,943mm long, 1,874mm wide and 1,468mm tall. The driving positing is excellent and the highly adjustable driver's seat helps to provide a great view of the road ahead. The boot is not as big as the enormous Mercedes E-Class Estate, but with 565 litres of space with the seats up, it's got more than enough for most people.

Pros
  • Excellent standard equipment
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Excellent infotainment system
Cons
  • Lack of standard equipment

The Audi A6 Avant can rival – maybe even edge ahead of – many of its competitors from BMW, Mercedes and Volvo. It's wider and taller than before, which equates to a larger cabin, although curiously, the luggage capacity remains unchanged at 565 litres. A more rakish and stylish exterior houses a quality-rich cabin filled with cutting edge technology and up to three digital screens.

Pros
  • Gorgeous interior
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Decent infotainment system
Cons
  • Limited engine options

New Audi A6 Avant joins the firm's ever-expanding range. Debuts with two diesel engines and confusing names. Offers vast interior passenger space, a practical rear end, and all the kit you can find on the more expensive A7 and A8 and some punchy powertrains.

Pros
  • Powerful diesel engine
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Lots of standard equipment
Cons
  • Noisy gearbox
  • Not as responsive to drive as a BMW 5er
