Product Overview

Audi Q5 Mk2 (chassis code FY / Type 80A) facelift is a compact crossover in production from 2020. It is available with a range of inline-4 and V6 engines that displaced 2.0 to 3.0 liters.
Those who drive offroad, for work or leisure, will appreciate the approach and departure angles that the chassis offers. The official fuel economy rating is exceptionally rosy, though it may cast more doubts on the trustworthiness of the regulators and perhaps the owner's own sanity than it relates to reality.
Drivers who appreciate handling will be pleased to know that the Audi Q5 II comes with multi-link suspensions at all four corners.

2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel gets a minor low-end performance boost, with power and torque now 201bhp and 295lb ft - a 14bhp increase over the outgoing model. The 0-62mph sprint is now roughly half a second quicker, at 7.6sec. Engine-off coasting at any road-legal speed and the ability to activate the start/stop function at speeds below 14mph help raise the claimed combined fuel economy to 44.8mpg.

The Q5 TFSIe is the first in a soon-to-be-long line of new Audi plug-in hybrids. It mates a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine to an electric motor powered by a 14.1kWh lithium ion battery. On paper, working together, the two units can deliver 362bhp, with a top speed of 148mph and a 0-62mph time of 5.3secs. The car can also travel a claimed 26 miles on electric-only power.

The first-generation Audi Q5 made its debut in 2008 and was the first mid-size SUV from the German brand. The second generation arrived in 2016, with a facelifted model in 2020 bringing further styling and tech tweaks. It can’t quite match the class leaders for entertaining driving dynamics, but it’s more comfortable than before and boasts enhanced refinement. The standard car is offered with either a 261bhp 2.0-litre petrol engine or a 201bhp diesel unit labelled 40 TDI quattro. Those with deeper pockets can opt for the Q5 TFSI e plug-in hybrid version.

Pros
  • Cheap to run

There are two plug-in Q5 TFSI e models on offer, both complete with a 14.1kWh battery and 141bhp electric motor. The idea being, of course, is that you can do the school run or shorter commutes virtually fuel-free and then have the freedom of a petrol car at the weekend. In pure-EV mode, it's silent, suave and just generally makes you feel full of smug.

The Q5 inherits its predecessor's full five-star Euro NCAP crash safety rating. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also fitted as standard, so you can plug in your smartphone instead if you want. With a 550-litre boot – expanding to 1,520 litres with the useful 40:20:40 split rear seat bench folded down – there's plenty of luggage room in the Audi.

While not quite a masterpiece, the Audi Q5's interior is still superb. The front seats are broad and firm, and far more comfortable than they look. The back bench's 38 inches of legroom is merely OK, being a bit of a squeeze for 6-footers. There's still plenty of luggage space in this Audi.

The Q5 PHEV delivers excellent fuel economy relative to its siblings. With the battery fully charged, we were able to easily achieve 20 miles of electric-only range. The latest MMI Touch infotainment system ditches Audi's conventional center console controller for a 10.1-inch touch screen that has an easy and intuitive menu.
