Product Overview

Citroen C5 Aircross is a compact crossover in production from 2017. It is available with a range of inline-3 and inline-4 engines that displaced 1.2 to 2.0 liters.
Compared to the smaller C4 Cactus, the C5 is essentially the successor even though the two were sold side by side in the first few years of the C5 Aircross' model run.
The official fuel economy rating is exceptionally rosy, though it may cast more doubts on the trustworthiness of the regulators and perhaps the owner's own sanity than it relates to reality.

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
The C5 Aircross fulfils its promise of best-in-class practicality. Three individual, equal-width rear seats slide, recline and can be removed entirely. With those seats slid all the way forward there’s a very generous 720-litre boot. The only black mark in terms of space is the significant rear headroom reduction with the panoramic sunroof fitted.

Pros
  • Class-leading practicality
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • Soft ride
  • Lack of damping sophistication

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
The plug-in Aircross’s battery, carried under the rear seat, is claimed to be good for up to 34 miles and to take about two hours to charge. steering and handling are easy and precise, save for an intrusive lane-departure system whose 'off' switch is hidden behind the steering wheel. The car glides about in its electric mode, with a precise and highly predictable step-off that shades most purely petrol cars.

Pros
  • Powerful petrol engine
  • Easy to drive
  • Decent ride quality
Cons
  • Not the most practical

Citroën C5 Aircross Puretech costs £3030,725 in the UK. Engine, 1598cc petrol, turbo, 178bhp at 5,500rpm, Torque 184lb at 1650rpm. Knee-room is a bit tighter than I'd ideally like - and at 5ft 11in I’m not what you’d call particularly tall.

Beneath the quirky exterior is the same EMP2 platform that underpins everything from the DS 7 Crossback to the Vauxhall Vivaro. Its suspension is, on the face of it, pretty conventional, with MacPherson struts up front and a multi-link arrangement at the rear. The powertrain is shared with the Peugeot 508 Hybrid. It features a 1.6-litre, 178bhp four- cylinder turbo petrol engine and a 107bhp electric motor.

The Citroen C5 Aircross sits right at the top of the firm's UK line-up. It is built on the same PSA Group platform as the Peugeot 3008 and 5008. The rear features three individual, sliding, incline-adjustable and folding rear seats. There's no seven-seat option but it does mean that rear-seat space is generous.

Pros
  • Unique looks
  • Excellent fuel economy
Cons
  • No seven-seat option
  • No four-wheel drive option

autoexpress[6]

Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
Citroen's new C5 Aircross aims to capitalise on this quandary. It is totally unpretentious in its design, disregarding driver engagement in favour of solid comfort. However, a Peugeot 3008 is better to drive, has a higher-quality feel and is more composed in day-to-day use.

Pros
  • Excellent cabin and boot space
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Decent infotainment system
Cons
  • No climate control buttons
  • Lack of ergonomic driving position

Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol PureTech 130 engine is a known quantity. 128bhp might not sound like a lot, with a solid and easily exploitable 230Nm of torque from as little as 1,750rpm. The eight-speed automatic gearbox is a big contributor towards that, because no matter how hard you drive, it doesn't like to be rushed. Infotainment is bright and has lots of features, such as nav, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity as standard, but the graphics are a little fuzzy and the screen is slow to respond.

Pros
  • Punchy and economical engine
  • Lots of standard kit
Cons
  • Fiddly infotainment

I love the off-beat styling, the bold paintwork and the funky interior. The £35,000 asking price isn't too bad either, especially when the C5 Aircross undercuts hybrid versions of both the Peugeot 3008 and DS 7 Crossback. There's a 6.6kW onboard charger that means a full battery top-up takes less than two hours.

The real focus of the C5 Aircross is not under the hood or behind the wheels, but in the cabin. Up front, most versions get Citroën's Advanced Comfort seats, which are supremely well shaped and cushioned, with plenty of adjustment. In the back, there are three seats, all adult size (although not as big as those up front), and they can be moved forward and back or folded individually. With the rear seats in use you get at least 580 litres, and up to 720 with them folded flat.
