Product Overview

Skoda Octavia Mk4 Combi (chassis code NX) is a compact station wagon in production from 2019. It is available with a range of inline-3 and inline-4 engines that displaced 1.0 to 2.0 liters.
Compared to its predecessor, the Mk4 has a different, though not improved exterior styling. Interestingly, VW decided to give it independent rear suspensions. At the same time, PHEV and mild hybrid drivetrains became more readily available.
Skoda has made a good effort in aerodynamics, with a decent 0.26 coefficient of drag to show for it. The official fuel economy rating is exceptionally rosy, though it may cast more doubts on the trustworthiness of the regulators and perhaps the owner's own sanity than it relates to reality.
Another plus is the small 10.4m (34.1ft) turning circle.

The Octavia vRS Estate is essentially the Mk8 Golf GTI wagon that Volkswagen won’t build. It uses the same 242bhp engine as its GTI cousin and offers the same six-speed manual and seven-speed dual-clutch (DSG) gearboxes. The wheelbase has been extended by around 5cm for Skoda, so there’s more rear leg room.

Pros
  • Sleek styling
  • Lots of options
Cons
  • Not as fun to drive as the Golf GTI
  • Not as exciting as the Skoda

The new Skoda Octavia is as easygoing and understated as ever. Leg room is abundant, although the optional panoramic sunroof might cause you to scrape your head against the ceiling every now and then. The 2.0-litre diesel engine provides useful low-end punch (with peak torque of 251lb ft), excellent refinement and respectable fuel economy.

Pros
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Decent fuel economy
Cons
  • No diesel engine

The latest Skoda Octavia is a brilliant family car. However, the First Edition models were a little on the pricey side. There was always going to be better value to be found within the line-up. As a 114bhp 2.0-litre diesel in SE Technology spec, this Octavia estate represents a pretty solid entry point to the range.

Pros
  • Punchy engine
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • Expensive for what you get

Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
The new model has a far more elegant and premium look to it. Inside you'll find a clean, sophisticated cabin that could genuinely belong to an Audi. The two-spoke steering wheel has a whiff of old Mercedes S-Class about it. The 10.25-inch infotainment system integrates neatly into a dip on the dashboard. Material quality is also very impressive.

Pros
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Excellent infotainment system
Cons
  • Expensive for what it is
  • Alternatives are more fun to drive

There's a 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine linked to a 113bhp electric motor and equipped with a six-speed dual-clutch DSG transmission. The total output is 242bhp and 400Nm of torque, which is the same power as, and a little more torque than, the latest petrol vRS. The 13kWh battery gives a theoretical pure-electric range of 37 miles.

Pros
  • Powerful petrol engine
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Decent range
Cons
  • No automatic gearbox
  • Not as practical as regular VRS

The latest Octavia vRS is available with three powerplants – a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol, a 1.4- litre petrol-based plug-in hybrid and a turbodiesel edition. All of these iterations are available as hatchbacks or estates, too, giving the vRS nameplate great breadth. It's not as involving or as fun as Ford's Focus ST Estate, but it's hard to not appreciate the refinement and sophistication on offer here.

Pros
  • Punchy on-road performance
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Decent infotainment system
Cons
  • Not as fast as rivals
  • Not as fun as rivals

Skoda Octavia vRS TDI was crowned the Auto Express Car of the Year in 2020. Powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine that develops 197bhp and 400Nm of torque. Offered with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox only. 0-62mph time of 7.4 seconds - not slow, but not exactly hot hatch territory.

Pros
  • Good value for money
  • Comfortable ride
  • Decent standard equipment
Cons
  • Diesel lacks nimbleness
  • Lack of infotainment

At 4,658mm overall the Octavia Estate is longer than all of its compact hatch-based estate rivals, but some way short of the Ford Mondeo Estate. In the back, there's a folding centre armrest with a pair of cup-holders. Rear passengers get loads of headroom and legroom. The Octavia no longer leads the way for boot space in this class. The Peugeot 308 SW now wears that crown.

Pros
  • Cheap to run
  • Good standard equipment
  • Decent fuel economy
Cons
  • Lack of standard safety equipment

Skoda Octavia Estate is bigger, posher and even more practical. New cockpit design leaves no stone - or plastic component - unturned. 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine offers stout torque of 266 lbs ft between 1700 and 2750rpm. Seven-speed dual-clutch transmission quickly and unobtrusively offers right gear.

In the blue corner is the UK's favourite new Skoda Octavia: the 1.6-litre TDI hatchback with a manual gearbox. In the red corner, meet the Octavia your fleet manager (and the missus) would rather you didn't have. The Octavia Estate's rear legroom rivals that of a BMW 5-series or Mercedes E-class. The boot trumps the Audi A6 Avant and VW Passat Estate for capacity.

Pros

Cons
  • Lack of rear bulkhead

The Skoda Octavia Estate is one of the largest load luggers you can buy, yet is sensibly priced and won't cost the Earth to run. It's in competition with estate version of other family cars such as the Seat Leon, Ford Focus, VW Golf and Vauxhall Astra. Up front you get the same distinctive grille, though it's bluffer than before and the horrible twin headlights of the old car have been scrapped for a pair of slim-line LEDs.

Pros
  • Big boot
  • Lots of fun to drive
Cons
  • Lack of practicality
  • Not the most comfortable to drive

The new Skoda Octavia vRS Estate is available as a vRS iV hybrid model. This uses the same combination of 1.4-litre petrol engine and electric motor as the new VW Golf GTE and hybrid variants of the Cupra Leon ST. It produces an identical 245hp and drives the front wheels through the same six-speed DSG automatic gearbox. Skoda says it'll reach 60mph from rest in less than 7.3 seconds and reach 140mph.
