Product Overview

Seat Leon 3 (Typ KL) is a compact hatchback in production from 2012 to 2020. It was available with a range of inline-3 and inline-4 engines that displaced 1.0 to 2.0 liters.
Based on VAG's new MQB Evo platform, the Mk3 Leon is essentially a cheapened Mk8 Volkswagen Golf. As such, it has a series of tiny and tinier engines and lots of "aggressive" design features to compensate for that fact.
Unsurprisingly, Volkswagen made little effort to make the Leon a complete product, opting instead to throw parts at it from VAG's corporate bins. Some of the "engineering" choices are clearly made to reduce costs and to make the marketing material more solid. For example, the use of dry-clutch DSG ostensibly reduces fuel consumption, at the price of costly and frequent maintenance. The only money saved is by VW.

External Reviews

autocar[1]

Reviewer score 79% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from autocar have found:
The Leon Cupra R can make ground as fast as anything else with seatbelts and a horn. There’s no Haldex clutch to juggle power between the front and rear axles, because drive is sent exclusively to the front wheels. UK buyers aren’t offered a dual-clutch automatic like other markets, but the Cupra is all the more rewarding for it.
Pros
  • Fantastic powertrain
  • Powerful engine
Cons
  • Not quite as fun to drive as a Golf R
  • No automatic gearbox

Reviewer score 60% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from autoexpress have found:
Priced from £35,575, that's £2,400 more than the 4DRIVE and DSG-equipped model. Available only in Monsoon Grey, the Cupra 300 Carbon Edition gets carbon fibre side blades, as well as carbon fibre front and rear diffusers. There's a set of unique 19-inch alloy wheels, and quad-exit exhausts.
Pros
  • Cheap to run
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • Lack of refinement
  • Poor ride quality

carmagazine[3]

Reviewer score 71% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from carmagazine have found:
The facelifted Seat Leon features a collection of small improvements aimed at driving the three-year-old hatchback from the Ateca's zeitgeisty shadow. As well as two updated motors, the facelift also includes a load of kit lifted from the above SUV, plus a remodelled front end. A refreshed interior packs a new multimedia system, measuring from five or eight inches depending on the boxes you tick.
Pros
  • Fantastic infotainment system
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • More expensive than the Ateca
