Product Overview

Volvo XC60 II (chassis code SPA) is a compact crossover in production from 2017 to 2020, whereupon it received a facelift. It was available with a range of inline-4 engines that displaced 2.0 liters.
With this generation, Volvo has gone fully into the one-engine, multiple output route. Unfortunately, this has led to wide reports of engine-related issues, largely due to the high stress that the "efficient" engines have to go through.
The plug-in hybrid drivetrain can help the owner save on fuel and car tax, though those who plan on keeping the car after warranty should be mindful of the complexity. Its official fuel economy rating is exceptionally rosy, though it may cast more doubts on the trustworthiness of the regulators and perhaps the owner's own sanity than it relates to reality.

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
Volvo's new mild hybrid system is available on both petrol and diesel XC60s. It adds a 48V starter motor/generator, and a battery sited in the boot can regenerate power through braking to then aid the engine under acceleration. The petrol B5’s economy of little over 25mpg on a mixed driving route that included plenty of motorway miles goes some way to limiting this car's appeal. Diesel remains a far superior option in a car of this size and weight.

Pros
  • Smooth, quiet acceleration
  • Smooth and quiet powertrain
Cons
  • Poor fuel economy
  • No automatic gearbox

The XC60’s directly driven electric rear axle makes it work particularly well in urban environments. The zero-emissions driving mode – dubbed ‘Pure’ – seems to free up a little more electric urge than it has in Hybrid mode. Electric-only performance out of town is a little bit less impressive than within the urban environment.

Pros
  • Sleek, modern styling
  • Good electric-only performance
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • Under-damped infotainment system
  • No automatic shift paddles

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
The XC60 T8 has a new, longer-range battery featuring a third layer of cells. This has a capacity of more than 50% over the earlier PHEV’s 11.6kWh. The electric motor that powers the rear axle has also been upgraded to make 143bhp – an increase of 56bhp. Performance is more than adequate when running as an EV, although pressing too hard on the accelerator pedal will fire the combustion engine into life.

Pros
  • Impressive electric powertrain
  • Impressive battery life

C40, which can be ordered from £559, while the most expensive is £1079 for a plug-in hybrid S90. That £899 for our XC60 includes the standard 6000 annual miles (calculated pro rata if you hand it back early), and we selected an extra 2000 miles per year at £15 per month. So £914 all-in as one monthly payment, and 30 days of free insurance are offered.

Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
Despite the extra weight from the battery pack, the Q5 still handles fairly well. The Volvo doesn't have as much oomph from the electric motor, so the petrol engine takes more of the strain – and you hear it; it's a dronier, more vocal unit. Volvo's interior feels more individual than the Audi's, even if the tech isn't quite as slick or responsive.

Pros
  • Powerful petrol engine

At 483 litres, the XC60's boot is the smallest here, and that's true with the rear seats folded as well. The Volvo is also able to tow more than either of its rivals, to a maximum of 2,400kg. Despite a mild-hybrid boost, it'll also be more expensive to run than the X3, but it's luxurious and spacious inside.

The XC60 is one of the best cars I've ever had the pleasure of running on the fleet. 0-62mph takes just 5.2 seconds, according to Volvo's official figures. The seats are super-comfortable and provide lots of support. There's even a special storage space in the boot for the charging cables.

The new Volvo XC60 D4 is a slightly old-school, company car tax-friendly offering that the company is sneaking into its schedule just before it goes all electrified. It's an honest workhorse, with a 0-62mph time of 8.4 seconds but more importantly, typical diesel shove in the mid-range. More than many of its stablemates, this car showcases Volvo's focus on comfort instead of on-the-edge driving dynamics.

The NX 300h uses a non-turbo 2.5-litre petrol engine and an electric motor that's fed by a nickel-metal hydride battery pack mounted under the boot floor for a total of 195bhp. The two different power sources are managed by a CVT continuously variable automatic transmission, so there are no gears to switch between. The ride is fine, although bigger bumps aren't dealt with quite as deftly as in the Volvo, but the NX mostly covers bad roads with a decent level of comfort. Infotainment is poor, not as good to drive as Volvo, CVT transmission is still not the greatest.

Pros
  • Decent performance
  • Decent infotainment
  • Good standard equipment
Cons
  • Infotainment isn’t as good as Volvo
  • Not as practical as the XC60

The XC60 is a mash-up of Volvo's XC90 and V90 models. It feels just as special in here as you'd hope, with a soothing sweep of the dash which is pleasingly clutter-free. The driving position is excellent, sensibly the seats major on comfort than keeping you upright. It's pretty quiet and cruises serenely but is never short of sufficient go.
