Product Overview

The L663 Land Rover Defender 90 is the shorter, three-door version of the mid-size Defender 110. Currently, it is one of the most compact SUVs equipped with a V8 engine, which in this case is aided with a supercharger. As the new Range Rover is moving to BMW-sourced turbo V8, this is one of the last chance to get the beloved JLR Supercharged V8s.
Land Rover has ensured that the Defender remains their most offroad-worthy vehicle. This starts with the 2-speed transfer case with low range gears in a true 4x4 drivetrain layout. The L663 Defender's suspension afford the vehicle more suspension travel than traditional multi-link setup; on the Defender 90, air suspension is optional, while coil springs are standard.

External Reviews

autocar[1]

Reviewer score 81% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from autocar have found:
Land Rover has dropped the four-cylinder diesel engine from the Defender. If you want a Defender that drinks its fuel from the black pump, you now have just one engine to choose from: the recently introduced Ingenium 3.0-litre straight six. It’s available in three guises: D200, D250 and D300, with power outputs ranging from 197bhp to 296bhp. The mid-level D250 kicks out a handsome 245bhp and 420lb ft of torque.
Pros
  • Superb off-road capability
  • Lots of standard equipment
Cons
  • No automatic gearbox
  • Tiny boot

Reviewers from autoexpress have found:
Mild-hybrid power comes with a hefty price premium in the Defender 90. Any tick-every-box customers will love the X edition, its extensive equipment list and its scope for further personalisation. Cheaper versions should be easier to recommend, nevertheless. The shorter Defender feels every bit as special as its 110 stablemate.
Pros
  • Excellent off-road capability
  • Pivi Pro infotainment system
Cons
  • No three-door option

carmagazine[3]

Reviewer score 80% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from carmagazine have found:
The new Defender is codenamed L663 and will be based on the D7U aluminium monocoque architecture. Air suspension and coil springs will be offered, with the former extending by up to 75mm and lowering by 50mm. There’s permanent all-wheel drive, a standard low-range transfer case, three auto-locking diffs (front axle, centre and rear axle), and a choice of 18-22-inch wheels.
Pros
  • Excellent off-road capability
  • Impressive on-road performance
Cons
  • Rugged B-road

cnet[4]

Reviewer score 80% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from cnet have found:
The Land Rover Defender 90 is available at dealerships right now. It starts at $500, including $1,350 in delivery fees, not that much more than a two-door Jeep Wrangler. The Defender's interior is versatile, with plenty of space to stash things in its dashboard-spanning cubby.
Pros
  • Excellent off-road tech
  • Comfortable, quiet cabin
  • Excellent infotainment system
Cons
  • Poor lanekeeping
  • Expensive for what you get
