Product Overview

The 5th-gen Kia Sportage is a compact crossover that sits below the company's mid-size Sorento and Telluride. It shares the design language of other current Kia vehicles and is built on the new Hyundai-Kia N3 platform, which also powers the new Hyundai Santa Cruz and Tucson and Kia Carnival and K8, among others.
For this new generation (QN5), the Sportage is powered by a choice of turbocharged inline-4 petrol or diesel engines. They are paired with a range of transmission options from manual to DCT to conventional automatic, sending power either to just the front wheels or, optionally, to all four wheels. Hybrid models are forthcoming.
Interestingly, Kia is making the new Sportage in two wheelbases, though availability depends on the market.

External Reviews

autocar[1]

Reviewer score 49% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from autocar have found:
The Sportage is class-competitive without being the most accommodating family car you might spend somewhere between £30,000 and £40,000 on. The back seats are adult-sized and comfortable even for six-foot occupants, and you could get three kids across them if you needed to. The hybrid system is particularly refined and smooth, and makes plenty of torque for easy roll-on responsiveness. It handles precisely and with at least a modicum of agility, and without rolling or heaving like a more traditional SUV.
Pros
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Good range of engines
  • Decent fuel economy
Cons
  • Fiddly infotainment
  • Not the most comfortable to drive

autoexpress[2]

Reviewer score 69% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from autoexpress have found:
The Kia Sportage is a great all-round family SUV. It has good engines, strong build quality, a keen driving experience and plenty of interior space. It also boasts a unique look, up-to-date infotainment and decent value. Standard equipment is generous and Kia’s famous seven-year warranty only adds to the appeal.
Pros
  • Unique looks
  • Excellent infotainment
Cons
  • Lack of standard equipment

carmagazine[3]

Reviewer score 56% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from carmagazine have found:
There is, it seems, a Sportage for everyone regardless of the level of electrification you’re comfortable with. With five trim levels ranging from spartan, through sporty and up to sumptuous, you should be able to balance luxury and affordability to suit your bank balance. So far we’ve only sampled the 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine in regular, mild hybrid and full hybrid guises. It knocks 0.6sec off the official 0-62mph time although you won’t notice much of an uptick in performance on the road.
Pros
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Fantastic infotainment system
Cons
  • Lacklustre ride quality
  • Not the most fun to drive
