Product Overview

The 2021 iPad Pro joins the two MacBook models unveiled last year in adopting the new M1 chip with 8 GPU cores and 8 CPU cores. Available in two sizes, the 12.9-inch model further adds an iPad-first mini LED IPS display with 2596 local dimming zones for exceptional HDR viewing.
Apple claims that the M1 chip in the new iPad Pro is up to 50% faster in CPU performance than the A12Z Bionic found in last year's model, while GPU performance sees a 40% improvement.
Also new to iPad Pro is optional 5G connectivity that affords the user always-connected mobile computing.
Like always, Apple updated the Magic Keyboard with the new iPad Pro.

External Reviews

arstechnica[1]

Reviewer score 90% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from arstechnica have found:
Apple claims this iPad Pro is 50 percent faster than its predecessor. Geekbench results are 51.6 percent better in the single-core test and a whopping 61 percent better for multicore. At release, the 2021 iPad Pro will run iPadOS 14.5. Despite a few design quibbles, it's generally a delight to use.
Pros
  • Incredible performance improvements in the M1 and M1 Mini
  • Excellent software support
  • Great battery life
Cons
  • No HDR support

digitaltrends[2]

Reviewer score 84% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from digitaltrends have found:
On the iPad Pro, you'll get Apple's iPadOS, which has so far stuck pretty close to iOS. There have been some updates, like improved multitasking, but in general, if you've used an iPhone, you've pretty much used an iPad. It's possible that we'll hear more about iPadOS at the upcoming WWDC, and if we don't, rest assured that iPadOS still offers the best tablet software experience.
Pros
  • Beautiful display
  • M1 chip is a huge improvement
  • Excellent performance
  • Great battery life
Cons
  • No water-resistant
  • No support for Mac apps

gizmodo[3]

Reviewer score 75% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from gizmodo have found:
The new iPad Pro has the potential to be a powerful machine for creative professionals. There are no iPad versions of Adobe Audition or Avid Pro Tools, two of the essential digital audio workstations. There's not even a full-featured version of Logic Pro, Apple's own audio editor, for iPad.
Pros
  • Sleek, lightweight design
  • Very good performance
  • Great battery life
Cons
  • No iPadOS support
  • No full-featured version of Logic Pro

laptopmag[4]

Reviewer score 87% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from laptopmag have found:
In its current state, iPadOS is limited given the power under the hood of this latest tablet. The Liquid Retina XDR display is fantastic, but the benefits over the previous display are limited when you aren't watching HDR content. Apple could bring the iPad Pro closer to parity with Macs when iPadOS 15 arrives.
Pros
  • Sleek, premium design
  • Excellent performance
  • Excellent battery life
Cons
  • No 5G support
  • No 4K display

ndtv[5]

Reviewer score 86% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from ndtv have found:
The 2021 iPad Pro (11-inch) can be used as a laptop, but the M1 MacBook Air is still the more sensible choice. The iPad Pro line has always had best-in-class Apple SoCs but have also always been held back by iPadOS and iPad apps. It doesn't seem that iPadOS 15 will bring any major changes in the way you use an iPad or the kind of apps you can get. For most people, I think the power of Apple's SoC is the best option.
Pros
  • M1 SoC is a huge improvement over the 12.9-inch model
  • Compact and lightweight
  • Good battery life
Cons
  • No full multitasking or file system access
  • No external monitor support

nextpit[6]

Reviewer score 98% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from nextpit have found:
iPad Pro 2021 once again comes with a quartet of speakers that offers really excellent audio performance. The main camera of the iPad Pro consists of a 12 MP wide-angle camera, a 10 MP ultra wide- angle camera, and a True Tone Flash. The iPad can record videos in 4K. The new iPad Pro begins visible when performing computationally intensive tasks, which is to be expected.
Pros
  • Bigger and lighter than last year's iPad Pro
  • Great battery life
  • Excellent audio performance
Cons
  • More expensive than previous iPad Pro models

notebookcheck[7]

Reviewer score 85% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from notebookcheck have found:
The iPad Pro 11 (2021) is a powerful gaming companion, in our opinion. Not only does it have a 120 Hz display, it also has convincing speakers. The surface temperatures are inconspicuous at all times, and the tablet does not even get lukewarm when subjected to constant load. Apple has not included a 3.5 mm headphone jack, but it sells appropriate USB Type-C adapters.
Pros
  • Bright 120 Hz display
  • Excellent performance
  • Excellent battery life
  • Fast Wi-Fi
Cons
  • No storage expandability

pcmag[8]

Reviewer score 71% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from pcmag have found:
iPad Pro is just as powerful as a Mac, but its operating system keeps it tightly leashed. To justify selling a high-priced tablet with the power of a pro laptop, Apple needs to unshackle the iPad Pro. The iPad Air, at $599, is where the iPad line really shines right now.
Pros
  • Beautiful 120Hz display
  • Powerful ProMotion and LiDAR
  • Excellent battery life
Cons
  • No true external display support
  • No multi-window support

t3[9]

Reviewer score 94% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from t3 have found:
The iPad Pro 12.9-inch (2021) is the most technologically superior version of the best tablet family. For those who love video, it offers the best screen out there. It's future-proofed thanks to its ridiculous processor. It has a cool new feature that's ideal for video calls. iPadOS is its weakest link in some ways, for those who want to use it for as a real pro machine, at least.
Pros
  • Beautiful 120Hz screen
  • Great battery life
  • Great speakers
Cons
  • 60Hz screen isn’t great for video calls
  • Magic Keyboard is hideous

techradar[10]

Reviewer score 93% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from techradar have found:
Apple has introduced a new XDR display on the larger 12.9-inch model. The M1 processor brings this generation of the iPad Pro up to the same level of performance as the latest M1 Macs. The new iPad Pro has a 28.65-watt-hour battery that Apple claims gives you 10 hours of usage of the Wi-Fi model and nine hours on the 5G model.
Pros
  • Sleek design
  • Superb display
  • Great battery life
Cons
  • No Apple Pencil support
  • No 3.5mm jack

theverge[11]

Reviewer score 90% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from theverge have found:
A 256GB 12.9-inch iPad Pro with a Magic Keyboard costs $1,548. A 256GB MacBook Air with the same processor costs $999. Until I hit the limits of iPadOS (which I hit regularly), I enjoy using an iPad Pro more than I do any other computer.
Pros
  • The best screen you can get on a portable device
  • Great battery life
  • Great display
Cons
  • No multi-user support
  • No Apple Pencil support

tomsguide[12]

Reviewer score 89% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from tomsguide have found:
The 11-inch iPad Pro is one of the longest lasting tablets we've ever seen. You can use the iPad Pro 2021 with either the previous Magic Keyboard or the brand-new white model Apple's introduced. Nothing has changed on the 2nd Gen Apple Pencil which is still an excellent (albeit expensive) stylus.
Pros
  • Incredibly fast performance
  • Excellent battery life
  • Excellent camera
  • Great multitasking
Cons
  • No Touch ID support
  • No HDR10+ support

whathifi[13]

Reviewer score 100% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from whathifi have found:
The iPad Pro 12.9 is a hugely expensive tablet and price is hard to justify for anyone who has no intention of taking advantage of its productivity potential. But it's also the best tablet you can buy for watching movies on. Sound, meanwhile, is great from the speakers, and simply amazing with a pair of AirPods Max cans.
Pros
  • Superb picture quality
  • Impressive audio performance
  • Superb battery life
Cons
  • Nothing in particular

wired[14]

Reviewer score 81% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from wired have found:
Don't get swayed by all the desktop-grade features Apple is waving in your face. This machine still won't feel as reliable as a good ol' laptop. There's just some wonkiness that makes working off of it feel limiting. If you want this to be more like a computer, bring back the headphone jack.
Pros
  • Great performance for the price
  • Great battery life
  • 5G connectivity
Cons
  • No headphone jack
