Product Overview

Sony FE 14mm F1.8 GM is a fast ultra-wide full-frame prime lens for Sony's E-mount mirrorless cameras. Offering the widest angle of view among Sony's first-party lens lineup, the SEL14F1.8GM continues Sony's streak with a light and compact design, being considerably more portable than its competition.
That, however, does not mean that the FE 14mm F1.8 GM does not come with a complex optical formula. With 14 elements in 11 groups, including two extreme aspherical (XA), two extra-low dispersion (XD), and one Super ED elements, it is also one of the most compact full-frame lens with such a complex construction.
In terms of autofocus, Sony endows the FE 14mm F1.8 GM with two XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors that ensure smooth, swift, and silent focusing.
The bulbous front element makes it impossible for the SEL14F1.8GM to accept a screw-in front filter. However, the lens has a rear filter holder that makes up for this omission.
Like other recent Sony G and GM lenses, the new 14mm F1.8 comes with a customizable button and a declickable aperture ring.

Reviewer score 84% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from cameralabs have found:
The Sony FE 14mm f1.8 G Master is a unique lens: their widest prime to date. It shares the honour of joint-brightest 14mm with the similarly-priced Sigma 14 1.8 Art. But unlike the Sigma, the Sony is a native mirrorless design that’s not only smaller, but less than half the weight. This makes it not just more portable but much more practical for shooting from a gimbal, drone or star tracker.
Pros
  • Bright f1.8 focal ratio
  • Wide field of view
  • Compact and portable
Cons
  • Not as sharp as Sigma 14 1.8 Art

digitalpicture[2]

Reviewers from digitalpicture have found:
The Sony FE 14mm f/1.8 GM is not an inexpensive lens, but it is a great value. Despite only opening to f/2.8, the current Canon and Nikon 14mm lenses cost considerably more. The Sony lens also surpasses the Sigma lens's sharpness in the periphery.
Pros
  • Excellent sharpness in the center of the frame
  • Compatible with all Sony E-mount cameras
  • 1 1/3 stop max aperture opening
Cons
  • Price per focal length

pcmag[3]

Reviewer score 85% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from pcmag have found:
The Sony FE 14mm F1.8 GM is an excellent performer, especially given its ambitious optical formula. Close focus is available to 9.8 inches, giving you some freedom to lean in and get those shots with a huge, sweeping background behind diminutive subjects. In-camera corrections eliminate barrel distortion and a visible vignette from photos.
Pros
  • Lightweight, compact design
  • Excellent sharpness
  • Easy to use
Cons
  • Some barrel distortion visible in uncorrected Raw images
