Product Overview

Sony X90J is a full-array LED 4K smart TV in Sony's 2021 BRAVIA XR-series. Alongside the higher-spec'd X95J, the X90J is part of Sony's 2021 MASTER Series.
The BRAVIA XR-series is powered by Sony's new Cognitive Processor XR that is able to analyze an array of features simultaneously to produce unprecedented audio and video processing. This elevates contrast, color reproduction, and dynamic range. The Cognitive Processor XR also improves 4K upscaling and image smoothing more effectively as before.
Like its predecessor the XH90 / X900H, the X90J features full-array LED for precise local dimming. The X90J also continues to carry X-balanced speakers found in Sony's wireless speakers: they offer high-quality sound reproduction in a thin chassis.
Unsurprisingly, the X90J comes with Google Assistant and Apple AirPlay / HomeKit. It also has Chromecast built-in.
Sony refreshed its smart TV lineup at CES 2021, during which it introduced the new BRAVIA XR-series.

    Reviewers from cnet have found:
The Sony X90J delivered an excellent HDR image. While it didn't match the impact of the other two, both of which looked consistently brighter. The Sony was more pleasing with mixed theatrical content and also showed less blooming. CNET is no longer publishing advanced picture settings for any TVs we review.
    Pros
    • Excellent HDR image quality
    • Low input lag
    • Good color accuracy
    Cons
    • Lacks a CMS

Reviewer score 66% (normalized by Neofiliac)
    Reviewers from rtings have found:
The Sony X90J is a great TV for most uses. It's best suited for watching movies and HDR content due to its high contrast ratio, full-array local dimming, and high HDR brightness. It has low input lag, fast response times, and a 120Hz refresh rate, making it a great choice for gaming. However, you'll have to wait a bit for its advertised VRR support.
    Pros
    • Outstanding contrast ratio and full-array local dimming
    • Low input lag
    • Good color gamut even though it isn't technically a wide gamut
    • Great response time to deliver clear images in fast-moving scenes
    • Upscales lower resolution content well and can remove...
    Cons
    • Narrow viewing angles
    • Doesn't support 4k @ 120Hz in Dolby Vision

    t3[3]

Reviewer score 82% (normalized by Neofiliac)
    Reviewers from t3 have found:
Sony X90J is a great mid-range TV for its price, offering terrific picture quality, decent black levels, smooth motion and nice usability. It runs on the all-new Google TV platform, offering users a refreshed home screen that's populated with content from a variety of streaming and catch-up services. But it has one of the glariest screens we've seen in a while, and the lack of VRR at launch will be disappointing to hardcore gamers. While its speakers do a decent job, they could stand to be a bit punchier.
    Pros
    • Great picture quality
    • Excellent upscaling
    • Google TV platform
    Cons
    • No VRR
    • No Dolby Vision

    techradar[4]

Reviewer score 91% (normalized by Neofiliac)
    Reviewers from techradar have found:
For a mid-range TV without any attached soundbar, the Sony X90J is surprisingly powerful in the sound category. Using only two 10W full range drivers and two side tweeters, the X 90J delivers convincing and clear audio that, largely, sounds very good. While simulated 3D audio is never quite as good as a full Dolby Atmos setup – it's not even close. The TV does an incredible job taking HD content and upscaling to 4K, and native 4K HDR content – especially those shot in Dolby Vision – look exceptionally beautiful.
    Pros
    • Superb picture quality
    • Dolby Vision and 4K HDR support
    • Improved contrast control
    Cons
    • No HDMI 3.1 ports
    • No Dolby Atmos

    whathifi[5]

Reviewer score 81% (normalized by Neofiliac)
    Reviewers from whathifi have found:
The XR-50X90J’s Acoustic Multi-Audio speaker system joins its pictures in delivering a more aggressive experience than we’re used to experiencing with a 50-inch TV. This is especially true when it comes to the sort of density and expansion of sound associated with Dolby Atmos movie mixes. Despite the impressive headroom it typically sounds a little thin and bright to make some relatively high pitched sounds and vocals on occasion.
    Pros
    • Impressive picture quality
    • Brightness first
    • Dolby Atmos support
    Cons
    • Backlight blooming
    • Limited viewing angles
