Product Overview

Samsung TU8500 Crystal UHD is a 4K TV that features Samsung's Crystal Display and powered by the latest Crystal Processor 4K. It uses Dual LED backlight technology for improved color accuracy, contrast, and dynamic range.
The TU8500 sports a sleek, narrow-bezel design similar to the QLED models, even though conventional LCD panels are used. Like the QLED models, the TU8500 offers an Ambient Mode that allows it to work like a picture frame.
Naturally, the TU8500 comes with not only Samsung's own Bixby personal assistant but also Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa built-in. It also works with Apple AirPlay 2.
Samsung also markets the a white version of the TU8500, named TU8510.
Other 2020 4K Crystal TVs by Samsung include the TU7000, TU8000, TU8300, and TU9000 among others.

External Reviews

t3[1]

Reviewer score 75% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from t3 have found:
With HD content in SDR, the TU8500's image has a bright overall picture level, with a satisfying level of pop. Step it up with native 4K, and the screen snaps into clearer focus. Black level performance and contrast are reassuringly convincing for the price. Sonic performance is fine straight out of the box.
Pros
  • Excellent picture quality
  • Dolby Atmos support
  • Good sound
Cons
  • No Freeview Play
  • No HDR10+ support

techadvisor[2]

Reviewer score 69% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from techadvisor have found:
The 50in UE50TU8500 reviewed here is widely available for £649 (having had £100 sliced off its launch price early on) It's also available in 43-, 55- and 65in screen sizes. Image quality impresses, albeit with caveats. HDR support covers HDR10+, regular HDR and HLG, but there's no support for Dolby Vision. The set's audio performance is scalable.
Pros
  • Excellent picture quality
  • Dolby Atmos and HDR10+ support
Cons
  • Limited black level performance
  • No Dolby Vision

trustedreviews[3]

Reviewer score 74% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from trustedreviews have found:
Samsung’s TU8500 is an excellent option for those looking to break the bank. Crystal UHD is a clever bit of tech that aims to improve picture quality using a custom twin LED backlighting system. All services and apps are housed in a convenient launch bar with tiles for each service or menu screen. Sound quality is adequate, but the low end lacks subtle details and details can be lost in movies.
Pros
  • Excellent picture quality
  • Crystal UHD looks great
  • Excellent gaming performance
Cons
  • No Dolby Vision
  • No 4K/120Hz gaming

whathifi[4]

Reviewer score 83% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from whathifi have found:
The TU8500 wants for nothing on the streaming front, despite its very low price. Now TV, BT TV and BT Sport give you contract-free access to Sky and BT's exclusive programming. Plex is great for local streaming of your own media files. Music and radio can be streamed via Spotify, Tidal, Apple Music, Amazon Music, Deezer, BBC Sounds and TuneIn. AirPlay 2 features, giving iOS users yet another method of getting content on to the TV.
Pros
  • Clean, punchy picture
  • Impressive sound
  • Easy to set up and use
Cons
  • No Dolby Vision or HDR10+
