Product Overview

The ASUS ROG Flow X13 GV301 is a 13.4-inch 2-in-1 gaming laptop powered by AMD Ryzen processors. The first 2-in-1 in the ROG lineup, the Flow X13 features a custom PCIe 3.0 x8 interface that is faster than Thunderbolt 4, named ROG Mobile Interface, to connect to its eGPU.
With this eGPU support, the Flow X13 is able to feature up to AMD Ryzen 9 5980HS CPU in a chassis under 1.6cm thin. There is also a dedicated GeForce GTX 1650 GPU inside supports everyday tasks.
Thanks to its unique 2-in-1 form factor, the Flow X13 was able to offer a unique gaming experience. ASUS unveiled the ROG XG Mobile eGPU specifically for the Flow X13.
Alongside the Flow X13, ASUS also refreshed the ROG Strix G17, Strix SCAR 15, Strix SCAR 15, Strix SCAR 17, Zephyrus G14, Zephyrus G15, and Zephyrus Duo 15 SE at CES 2021.

The Asus ROG Flow X13 is a 2-in-1 gaming laptop. It has a GTX 1650 Max-Q graphics card and a 6-hour battery life. You can't buy the X13 without also purchasing Asus' eGPU with an RTX 3080. That's a big ask for someone like me in the market for a new laptop.

The ROG Flow X13 is a unique gaming laptop, thanks to its unique eGPU and its incredible portability. Despite a few odd design choices and mediocre battery life, it's hard to not be wowed by how much performance Asus stuffed into this compact laptop. The Razer Blade Stealth 13 is the primary alternative, though, and is currently still stuck with older graphics and processor options.

Asus has the ROG Flow X13 rated for 10 hours of battery life. It fell short of the mark, lasting only 6 hours and 30 minutes on the Laptop Mag Battery Test. The smaller the system, the harder it is to keep cool, especially when it's a gaming laptop.

The Asus ROG Flow X13 has a 62 Wh battery, which can supply the device with energy for almost 6 hours according to our WLAN test. The power consumption of the Asus device is worse compared to the competition, which is due to the components that are installed. With the eGPU dock, the small convertible transforms into a full-fledged desktop replacement in terms of performance.

Cons
  • Low color space coverage

The ROG Flow X13 represents an impressive achievement. It offers some of the best CPU performance we've seen to date from any kind of laptop. It managed a respectable 7 hours and 19 minutes in our battery rundown test. It doesn't upstage the Blade Stealth in this regard, though it gives it a run for its money.

  • Sleek, lightweight design
  • Comfortable keyboard

The aluminum-clad laptop has a generally solid feel with a pleasant industrial texture on the lid, bottom panel, and keyboard deck. The trackpad features a carbon-fiber look to match the keyboard deck and is Microsoft Precision-complaint. The speakers on the ROG Flow X13 are about average for an ultraportable.

t3[7]

Sentiment Score 58%
Reviewers from t3 have found the following***:
The Asus ROG Flow X13 offers both desktop-level gaming at home and decent gaming on the road. With the CG docking station connected, the X13 achieved an excellent 3D Mark Time Spy score of 10,340. The XG Docking Station uses a laptop version of the Nvidia GTX 3080 GPU that doesn't offer the same performance as the desktop version. The process of disconnecting the external graphics card is also overly complex, forcing you to quit out of most programs.

Pros
  • Lightweight and portable
  • Excellent gaming performance
  • Good battery life
Cons
  • Not as powerful as a dedicated gaming laptop
  • No Thunderbolt 3

While using the GTX 1650, the X13 ran Shadow of the Tomb Raider at an average of 40fps. The Razer Blade Stealth 13 ran that title at 45fps, and the Zephyrus G14 ran it at 74fps. While the Flow X13 is a top-notch convertible, and an impressive achievement from Asus, it also costs over $3,000.

The Asus ROG Flow X13 and the XG Mobile are an ambitious project that combines the latest processors from AMD for thin devices. It's a noble pursuit that attempts to make a gaming laptop more portable for users on the go while being a Herculean gaming rig at home. But this first iteration feels clunky when you use the two devices together.
