Product Overview

SIGMA 85mm F1.4 DG DN | Art combines a clear and delicate rendering performance with beautiful, rich bokeh effects. The 85mm F1.4 DG DN | Art has realized a lightweight and compact lens body significantly smaller than its DSLR sibling. Further, its small body is packed with a range of functionalities, including a dust- and splash-proofing.
85mm F1.4 is a specification almost synonymous with a portrait lens. Produced at SIGMA's Aizu factory in Japan, the SIGMA 85mm F1.4 DG DN | Art features five SLD (Special Low Dispersion) elements, one aspherical lens, and the latest high refractive index glass, which works to thoroughly correct aberrations. With a particular emphasis given to the correction of axial chromatic aberration, users will enjoy sharp images with no color bleeding.
The numerous rounds of ray-trace simulation, as well as repeated real-world testing, have given the 85mm F1.4 DG DN | Art its ability to minimize ghosting, ensuring clear, sharp images even when shooting in backlit conditions.
Further, the lens's AF motor system employs a stepping motor which is optimized for both phase detection AF and contrast AF. Not only does this provide a smooth shooting experience only possible with a mirrorless camera, such as face/eye detection AF, but it has also made the lens body itself much smaller.

cameralabs[1]

Reviewer score 84% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from cameralabs have found:
The Sigma 85mm f1.4 DG DN Art is a mild telephoto lens designed for full-frame mirrorless cameras and available in E-mount and L-mount versions. The lens focuses in around 0.8 sec from infinity to 1m (1:10 magnification), which is not overly fast. Focus accuracy and repeatability is critical to consistently produce sharp shots – especially with the narrow depth-of-field at f 1.4. AF-operation of the new lens is inaudible from the outside or if you record video.
Pros
  • Compact size and weight
  • Very good focus accuracy
  • Compact and light
Cons
  • Focus breathing could be more noticeable
  • No aperture ring

Reviewer score 81% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from pcmag have found:
The Sigma 85mm F1.4 DG DN Art's appeal and positioning varies a bit depending on which camera system you use. Focus is available to 2.8 feet (85cm), good enough to capture subjects at 1:8.3 life-size when focused close. Wide open, the pair nets photos with very good resolution (3,950 lines)
Pros
  • Excellent image quality
  • Sharp f/1.8 aperture
  • In-body stabilization
Cons
  • Omits optical stabilization

Reviewers from phillipreeve have found:
mm f/1.4 isn’t great which is unfortunately not uncommon with fast tele lenses. With the sun just outside the frame in one of the corners veiling flare can be a problem. Coma correction is pretty good. For milky way panorama stuff I would recommend to stop the lens down a little bit to reduce vignetting and getting a more even exposure across frame.
Pros
  • Very sharp
  • Very good bokeh
  • Very light
Cons
  • Bulky and heavy
  • Bokeh not very sharp

Reviewers from sonyalpha have found:
The Sigma 85mm F1.4 (1099 euros) is a superlative lens in all domains: optical performances, artistic rendering, AF performance, ergonomics, build quality but also size and weight and price. It is the ultimate 85mm lens in term of quality for a Sony A7RIV with its 61Mpix for portraits & weddings A must have! Outstanding sharpness in the centre and as of F2.8 across the frame. Clickless aperture allow for continuous et silent variation of the aperture.
Pros
  • Outstanding sharpness in the centre as of F1.4, very similar to the but a little bit less good than the one on
  • Excellent AF : fast, efficient, silent Smooth blurry background
  • Excellent Bokeh and very natural color rendition in video, Results are very c...
Cons
  • Distorsion and vignetting but that will be corrected in a future Lightroom Lens profile
  • Vignetting is huge in pincushion Chromatic aberrations are close to zero Resistance to flare is good but not more than that, you can easily get some flare when faci...
