Product Overview

The 2nd-generation Mercedes GLA-class subcompact crossovers share the same platform with the new A-class, B-class, and GLB-class.
The entry-level model in the company's crossover lineup, the GLA-class has been significantly reinforced compared with the previous model. Thanks to over 10 cm increase in height, the seating position is improved and passengers enjoy more headroom in the first row. Legroom in the rear is likewise more generous, despite the shortening of the vehicle.
Hallmark off-road design features include the upright front section, short overhangs at the front and rear, and protective cladding all round. 4MATIC models feature the Off-Road Engineering Package as standard. This comprises an additional driving program, a downhill driving assist function and an off-road animation in the media display, along with, in combination with MULTIBEAM LED headlamps, a special light function for off-road driving.

AMG

The GLA 35 AMG also rounds off the 35-series compact AMG lineup. The 2.0-litre engine found in the GLA 45 4MATIC+ and GLA 45 S 4MATIC+ is the most most powerful series-produced four-cylinder turbo engine and is available in two output and torque versions. The active, fully-variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive distributes the power to the rear axle wheel-selectively by AMG TORQUE CONTROL, providing the basis for top traction in any driving conditions. The AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 8G dual clutch transmission apportions the power within a split second to suit the specific driving situation.

Reviewer score 61%
Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
The first-generation model was heavily based on the A-class hatch. This new one, however, has been granted greater engineering freedom. It uses the turbocharged OM654 2.0-litre engine found in so many Mercedes cars. The handling is also fairly accomplished, with a light but precise feel to the electromechanical steering.

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
While externally there is distance between the two, the GLA's link to the A-Class is abundantly clear inside, where it shares the same appealingly designed and materially upmarket cockpit. Higher-end specs are the name of the game to get the desired premium feel. The multi-control infotainment still isn’t as intuitive on the move as BMW’s iDrive rotary scroller, while a few scratchy plastics, hollow-feeling door cards and the odd little creak and rattle just take the shine off.

  • Comfortable to drive
  • Fantastic infotainment system

Mercedes GLA went on sale in November 2013 as a jacked-up and slightly more rugged A-Class. A facelift in 2017 made it feel more like a compact SUV, but the GLA came of age in 2020 with the launch of the improved Mk2 version. Compared to the original model, it’s more practical, offers advanced driver-assistance tech and is a comfortable place in which to travel. When you add in a strong range of petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrains, plus powerful AMG versions, along with the improved quality of materials throughout the cabin, it has noticeably come of age.

Pros
  • More practical than the original model
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • Lack of practicality
  • Expensive compared to rivals

Mercedes has seen fit to give the new GLA a bolder look and a new lease of life. The interior of the latest model is new to the GLA, but will be familiar to anybody who has driven the current A-Class hatch or its derivatives. You sit on comfortable, adjustable seats, there's lots of practical storage space, and the easy-to-use MBUX operating system is by far and away the best infotainment set-up in the class.

Pros
  • Fantastic infotainment system
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • Lack of electric tailgate

Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
The original Mercedes GLA defined the term ‘crossover’ But it was flawed from the outset, with compromised packaging and an underwhelming driving experience. The new model is much more SUV-like in its appearance. Based once again on the A-Class hatchback, it was launched last year with that car's range of petrol and diesel engines. But, with the current push towards electric and hybrid technology showing no signs of slowing, Mercedes added this plug-in GLA 250 e to the line-up.

Pros
  • Powerful petrol engine
  • Comfortable to drive

Cons
  • Underwhelming driving experience

The latest Mercedes GLA is a huge improvement over its predecessor. It now looks, drives and feels like a small, premium SUV. It has one of the finest cabins in its class and can now comfortably accommodate a small family. However, you certainly have to pay for it, because the introduction of the second-generation car has also brought with it a significant price hike.

Pros
  • Sleek looks
  • Decent infotainment system
  • Good standard equipment
Cons
  • Expensive for a small SUV
  • Not particularly spacious

Mercedes GLA 35 comes in three different trim levels: AMG 35, Premium and Premium Plus. For the extra £2,500 beyond the standard car, the Premium trim adds extras including a larger digital driver's display and infotainment screen, augmented reality graphics for the navigation system, ambient lighting, and keyless entry. But that brings us onto the price - roughly £7,000 more than an A-Class with the same engine.

Pros
  • Gorgeous looks
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Good infotainment tech
Cons
  • Fidgety ride
  • Ride is fidgety

The A 45 has the world's most powerful turbocharged four-cylinder motor. The 415bhp and 369lbs ft it extracts from 2.0-litres of displacement is quite impressive. It's also much nicer inside than before thanks to the latest generation of Mercedes's MBUX cockpit. There's loads of space for rear passengers and a useful boot.

Pros
  • Powerful four-cylinder engine
  • Lots of space for rear passengers
Cons
  • No drift mode

Reviewers from carmagazine have found the following***:
The new GLA is dripping with high-tech features, possibly too many for the average Joe. While it's a little shorter, this new crossover is 104mm taller and the wheelbase has extended, growing rear space in particular by 116mm. The rear seats can recline and slide fore or aft up to 140mm and, if you slide them as far back as possible, it's at the expense of the 435 litres of boot space in the regular combustion engine variants.

Pros
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Excellent infotainment system
Cons
  • No manual transmission
  • Lacklustre gearbox tuning

The EPA rates the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLA45 at 20 miles per gallon city, 27 mpg highway and 23 mpg combined. The car is surprisingly chill in its default Comfort setting. The GLA's cabin is properly upscale, and if you've been in any other modern Benz, it should feel pretty familiar.

Pros
  • Gorgeous interior
  • Fantastic infotainment system
  • Comfortable ride
Cons
  • Not very smooth at lower speeds
  • No smartphone mirroring

wheel-drive GLAs get an Off-Road mode, not that this thing really begs to be taken off the beaten path, especially with 20-inch wheels. MBUX software is the star here, and it can be controlled by thumbpads on the steering wheel, a touchpad on the center console or simply by touching the screen. While the tech roster is rich, the rest of the GLA feels a little downmarket.

Pros
  • Lots of tech
  • Comfortable seats
  • Lots of driver-assistance tech
Cons
  • Lack of cargo space
  • Cabin feels a little bland
