Product Overview

The 2nd-generation Mercedes GLA-class subcompact crossovers share the same platform with the new A-class, B-class, and GLB-class.
The entry-level model in the company's crossover lineup, the GLA-class has been significantly reinforced compared with the previous model. Thanks to over 10 cm increase in height, the seating position is improved and passengers enjoy more headroom in the first row. Legroom in the rear is likewise more generous, despite the shortening of the vehicle.
Hallmark off-road design features include the upright front section, short overhangs at the front and rear, and protective cladding all round. 4MATIC models feature the Off-Road Engineering Package as standard. This comprises an additional driving program, a downhill driving assist function and an off-road animation in the media display, along with, in combination with MULTIBEAM LED headlamps, a special light function for off-road driving.

AMG

The GLA 35 AMG also rounds off the 35-series compact AMG lineup. The 2.0-litre engine found in the GLA 45 4MATIC+ and GLA 45 S 4MATIC+ is the most most powerful series-produced four-cylinder turbo engine and is available in two output and torque versions. The active, fully-variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive distributes the power to the rear axle wheel-selectively by AMG TORQUE CONTROL, providing the basis for top traction in any driving conditions. The AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 8G dual clutch transmission apportions the power within a split second to suit the specific driving situation.

autocar[1]

Reviewer score 61% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from autocar have found:
The first-generation model was heavily based on the A-class hatch. This new one, however, has been granted greater engineering freedom. It uses the turbocharged OM654 2.0-litre engine found in so many Mercedes cars. The handling is also fairly accomplished, with a light but precise feel to the electromechanical steering.
Pros
  • Decent off-road performance
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • Alternatives are more fun to drive

autoexpress[2]

Reviewer score 53% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from autoexpress have found:
Mercedes GLA went on sale in November 2013 as a jacked-up and slightly more rugged A-Class. A facelift in 2017 made it feel more like a compact SUV, but the GLA came of age in 2020 with the launch of the improved Mk2 version. Compared to the original model, it’s more practical, offers advanced driver-assistance tech and is a comfortable place in which to travel. When you add in a strong range of petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrains, plus powerful AMG versions, along with the improved quality of materials throughout the cabin, it has noticeably come of age.
Pros
  • More practical than the original model
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • Lack of practicality
  • Expensive compared to rivals

carmagazine[3]

Reviewer score 77% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from carmagazine have found:
The A 45 has the world's most powerful turbocharged four-cylinder motor. The 415bhp and 369lbs ft it extracts from 2.0-litres of displacement is quite impressive. It's also much nicer inside than before thanks to the latest generation of Mercedes's MBUX cockpit. There's loads of space for rear passengers and a useful boot.
Pros
  • Powerful four-cylinder engine
  • Lots of space for rear passengers
Cons
  • No drift mode

cnet[4]

Reviewer score 81% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from cnet have found:
The EPA rates the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLA45 at 20 miles per gallon city, 27 mpg highway and 23 mpg combined. The car is surprisingly chill in its default Comfort setting. The GLA's cabin is properly upscale, and if you've been in any other modern Benz, it should feel pretty familiar.
Pros
  • Gorgeous interior
  • Fantastic infotainment system
  • Comfortable ride
Cons
  • Not very smooth at lower speeds
  • No smartphone mirroring
