Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class Subcompact Crossover (H247)

NEX score 68%

Product Overview

The 2nd-generation Mercedes GLA-class subcompact crossovers share the same platform with the new A-class, B-class, and GLB-class.
The entry-level model in the company's crossover lineup, the GLA-class has been significantly reinforced compared with the previous model. Thanks to over 10 cm increase in height, the seating position is improved and passengers enjoy more headroom in the first row. Legroom in the rear is likewise more generous, despite the shortening of the vehicle.
Hallmark off-road design features include the upright front section, short overhangs at the front and rear, and protective cladding all round. 4MATIC models feature the Off-Road Engineering Package as standard. This comprises an additional driving program, a downhill driving assist function and an off-road animation in the media display, along with, in combination with MULTIBEAM LED headlamps, a special light function for off-road driving.

AMG

The GLA 35 AMG also rounds off the 35-series compact AMG lineup. The 2.0-litre engine found in the GLA 45 4MATIC+ and GLA 45 S 4MATIC+ is the most most powerful series-produced four-cylinder turbo engine and is available in two output and torque versions. The active, fully-variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive distributes the power to the rear axle wheel-selectively by AMG TORQUE CONTROL, providing the basis for top traction in any driving conditions. The AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 8G dual clutch transmission apportions the power within a split second to suit the specific driving situation.

autocar[1]

Sentiment Score 61%
Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
The first-generation model was heavily based on the A-class hatch. This new one, however, has been granted greater engineering freedom. It uses the turbocharged OM654 2.0-litre engine found in so many Mercedes cars. The handling is also fairly accomplished, with a light but precise feel to the electromechanical steering.

Pros
  • Decent off-road performance
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • Alternatives are more fun to drive

autocar[2]

Sentiment Score 58%
Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
While externally there is distance between the two, the GLA's link to the A-Class is abundantly clear inside, where it shares the same appealingly designed and materially upmarket cockpit. Higher-end specs are the name of the game to get the desired premium feel. The multi-control infotainment still isn’t as intuitive on the move as BMW’s iDrive rotary scroller, while a few scratchy plastics, hollow-feeling door cards and the odd little creak and rattle just take the shine off.

Pros
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Fantastic infotainment system
Cons
  • Lack of refinement and refinement

carmagazine[3]

Sentiment Score 60%
Reviewers from carmagazine have found the following***:
The new GLA is dripping with high-tech features, possibly too many for the average Joe. While it's a little shorter, this new crossover is 104mm taller and the wheelbase has extended, growing rear space in particular by 116mm. The rear seats can recline and slide fore or aft up to 140mm and, if you slide them as far back as possible, it's at the expense of the 435 litres of boot space in the regular combustion engine variants.
Find the original article here.
Pros
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Excellent infotainment system
Cons
  • No manual transmission
  • Lacklustre gearbox tuning

cnet[4]

Sentiment Score 81%
Reviewers from cnet have found the following***:
The EPA rates the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLA45 at 20 miles per gallon city, 27 mpg highway and 23 mpg combined. The car is surprisingly chill in its default Comfort setting. The GLA's cabin is properly upscale, and if you've been in any other modern Benz, it should feel pretty familiar.

Pros
  • Gorgeous interior
  • Fantastic infotainment system
  • Comfortable ride
Cons
  • Not very smooth at lower speeds
  • No smartphone mirroring

cnet[5]

Sentiment Score 78%
Reviewers from cnet have found the following***:
wheel-drive GLAs get an Off-Road mode, not that this thing really begs to be taken off the beaten path, especially with 20-inch wheels. MBUX software is the star here, and it can be controlled by thumbpads on the steering wheel, a touchpad on the center console or simply by touching the screen. While the tech roster is rich, the rest of the GLA feels a little downmarket.
Find the original article here.
Pros
  • Lots of tech
  • Comfortable seats
  • Lots of driver-assistance tech
Cons
  • Lack of cargo space
  • Cabin feels a little bland
