Product Overview

The second-generation BMW 4 Series Coupe (G22) departs from its predecessor in embracing clear differentiation from the BMW 3 Series on which it is based: Notably, a striking front end with prominent, vertical kidney grille is unique to the 4 Series. The powerful yet elegant shoulders and flowing roofline accentuate the vehicle's sporting credentials.

The G22 4 Series Coupe is lower and wider compared to the latest 3 Series sedan, though it retains BMW's signature 50:50 weight distribution.

All models now come standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission (Steptronic, sourced from ZF). Steptronic Sport transmission with new Sprint function as well as BMW xDrive (AWD) is also available. On the six-cylinder petrol models, a 48-volt mild hybrid system is added for improved engine response and efficiency. All diesel engines now feature two-stage turbocharging.

Inside, the G22 4 Series Coupe focuses on combining the latest technology with improved comfort. Large, 10.25-inch Control Display and optional 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster take the prominent position, while the latest BMW Head-Up Display offers 70% larger projection surface. New, cloud-based BMW Maps navigation system comes as standard, as are Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, including via WiFi.

Despite its larger dimensions, the 4 Series is easy to place on the road. Fully befitting its sporting brief, it is engagingly fleet-footed and quite incisive in its actions. The variable-rate sport steering of the M440i is direct off centre, too, giving the new BMW urgent turn-in.

In range-topping M440i xDrive trim, it's deeply impressive. But it's arguably at the bottom end of the range where the 4 Series is at its best. Turn the car into a corner and the 420i rotates instantly around the driver's hips. It rides sweetly, too.

The interior has come on in leaps and bounds to challenge Audi's perceived cockpitquality. Despite the longer wheelbase and extra width, the 4 Series is not what you'd call ‘a proper four seater' The rear screen eats too far into headroom in the back for that: they're for occasional child use only. All UK 4 Series are M Sports complete with sports seats and M tricolour stitching, and are decently equipped.
