BMW 4 Series Coupe (2nd gen, G22)

MSRP 39870 GBPNEX score 79%

Product Overview

The second-generation BMW 4 Series Coupe (G22) departs from its predecessor in embracing clear differentiation from the BMW 3 Series on which it is based: Notably, a striking front end with prominent, vertical kidney grille is unique to the 4 Series. The powerful yet elegant shoulders and flowing roofline accentuate the vehicle's sporting credentials.
The G22 4 Series Coupe is lower and wider compared to the latest 3 Series sedan, though it retains BMW's signature 50:50 weight distribution.
All models now come standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission (Steptronic, sourced from ZF). Steptronic Sport transmission with new Sprint function as well as BMW xDrive (AWD) is also available. On the six-cylinder petrol models, a 48-volt mild hybrid system is added for improved engine response and efficiency. All diesel engines now feature two-stage turbocharging.
Inside, the G22 4 Series Coupe focuses on combining the latest technology with improved comfort. Large, 10.25-inch Control Display and optional 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster take the prominent position, while the latest BMW Head-Up Display offers 70% larger projection surface. New, cloud-based BMW Maps navigation system comes as standard, as are Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, including via WiFi.

Sentiment Score 62%
Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
At £1950, Comfort Plus, includes a heated steering wheel, powered bootlid, keyless entry, electric front seats, lumbar support and extended storage. Technology Plus Pack is a bit trickier to justify. Head-up display and Harman Kardon surround sound are brilliant, and definitely worth ticking.

Pros
  • Gorgeous interior
  • Comfortable ride
Cons
  • Middling fuel economy
  • Cheap to run

autocar[2]

Sentiment Score 84%
Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
BMW claims the same 7.1sec 0-62mph sprint for the new version as it did for the old one – and the newbie’s quite a bit bigger and heavier. The car accelerates notably more keenly and cleanly, and although it still runs out of puff a little once you’re stretched it beyond 3500rpm, it feels plenty fast enough to suit most tastes and purposes. The 420d is the sort of car that would cruise at high speed, at better than 50mpg, for hours on end.

Pros
  • Gorgeous new design
  • Excellent handling
  • Impressive fuel economy
Cons
  • Not the smoothest of rides
  • No adaptive dampers

autoexpress[3]

Sentiment Score 83%
Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
In range-topping M440i xDrive trim, it's deeply impressive. But it's arguably at the bottom end of the range where the 4 Series is at its best. Turn the car into a corner and the 420i rotates instantly around the driver's hips. It rides sweetly, too.

Pros
  • Class-leading refinement
  • Excellent infotainment system
  • Decent standard equipment
Cons
  • Lack of detail

autoexpress[4]

The new BMW 4 Series continues where the previous model left off. Offers a stylish, fun-to-drive coupe that is brilliantly accomplished in so many key areas. Facing a number of talented rivals, the 4 Series manages to seamlessly combine impressive performance, attractive economy and a driver-focused quality.
