Product Overview

Audi A8 D5 (Typ 4N) is a full-size luxury sedan in production from 2017 to 2021, whereupon it received a facelift. It was available with a range of V6 and V8 engines that displaced 3.0 to 4.0 liters.
Unfortunately, the naturally-aspirated W12 engine is no more. The remaining engines all became "greener" (or rather more complex and harder to fix should things go wrong, at the expense of repeated environmental damages and wastes). This is also the generation when Audi adopted its new nomenclature (with numbers roughly double the engine displacement).
An interesting note is that every engine available is a bi-turbo, which just over a decade ago meant "fun". How times change!
The more desirable engines are the 60 TFSI (not to be confused with the 60 TFSI e) and the 60 TDI. These torquey monsters are quite good to drive but not meant for long-term relationships.
Audi has made a good effort in aerodynamics, with a decent 0.26 coefficient of drag to show for it. The official fuel economy rating is exceptionally rosy, though it may cast more doubts on the trustworthiness of the regulators and perhaps the owner's own sanity than it relates to reality.
Drivers who appreciate handling will be pleased to know that the Audi A8 (D5) comes with multi-link suspensions at all four corners. This provides the best cornering performance and tunability, at the expense of cost and a little bit of durability.

The new A8 60 TFSIe is on a par with its petrol and diesel equivalents. But then again, it should be. Both BMW and Mercedes have had plug-in versions of their respective limos on sale for the past couple of years. That tech includes a 126bhp ‘permanently excited’ electric motor paired to a more conventional 335bhp 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 petrol engine. 0-62mph takes just 4.9 seconds (quicker than both the S560e and 745e) and given the run of a German Autobahn it will accelerate up to an electronically-limited 155mph.

Pros
  • Punchy electric powertrain
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Frugal interior
Cons
  • Alternatives are more fun to drive

There’s little to tell the fourth-generation S8 apart from its less sporting A8 sibling. At standstill, the new model looks pumped but subtly so and without any obviously contrived design elements. The brawny engine is the undisputed star of the show, with the sort of sledgehammer performance to propel it from standstill to 62mph it in a scarcely believable 3.9sec.

Pros
  • Powerful engine
  • Impressive ride quality
  • Excellent infotainment
Cons
  • Lack of dynamic agility
  • No rear wheel steer

The Audi S8 sits atop the line-up of the latest A8 executive saloon. In order to upgrade the already technology-packed model, Audi has crammed in even more tech and its turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 petrol engine. With 563bhp, the new unit has 34bhp more than the top-spec version of the previous S8.

Pros
  • Powerful engine
  • Impressive refinement
  • Comfortable cabin
Cons
  • Noisy at low speed

The Audi A8 and longer wheelbase A8 L showcase the company's latest technology, including the TFSI e petrol/electric hybrid models. It's for sale in the luxury limousine sector, and with a starting price of around £70,000, it's not a purchase for the faint hearted. But what you get for the money is one of the most technologically advanced cars you can buy.

Pros
  • Class-leading fuel economy
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Lots of standard kit
Cons
  • More expensive than rivals
  • Not as comfortable as rivals

Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
Audi's main source of power is a 3.0-litre V6. This brings the total output to 443bhp and 700Nm of torque. As a result, the A8 has superb performance. The availability of instant torque from the electric motor makes for effortless overtaking. It's very refined, too, because the motor is completely silent.

Pros
  • Powerful V6
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Decent infotainment system
Cons
  • Poor ride quality
  • Not much fun to drive

autoexpress[6]

Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
The A8 is Audi's flagship saloon, and its cabin is awash with premium materials and gadgets. The back seats offer more than enough head and legroom; opt for the A8 L and there's a ridiculous amount of space. All A8s come with standard quattro four-wheel drive, along with an eight-speed automatic gearbox. Be especially scrupulous checking for any panel damage, because fixing aluminium dings is a specialist and expensive job.

Pros
  • Excellent fuel economy
  • Excellent cabin
  • Excellent standard equipment
Cons
  • No automatic gearbox
  • Lack of standard equipment

Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
Audi’s largest saloon is still every bit the hi-tech tour de force you expect. It gives the A8 unflappable confidence no matter whether you’re on the motorway, chauffeuring clients into town, or making the most of a good road. Other highlights for this update include fresh styling with a wider, brasher grille and new OLED rear lights.

Pros
  • Powerful V8
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Impressive infotainment tech
Cons
  • Predictive air suspension won’t be optional on the rest of the range

Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
The S8 is only available as a standard wheelbase car, with no S8 L option. Compared to its two biggest rivals, the Mercedes S-Class and BMW 7 Series, it is both the longest and the heaviest. Audi uses a revised version of its 4.0-litre, twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engine. The gearbox and four-wheel-drive system are both used in the standard car.

Pros
  • Best-in-class performance
  • Good standard equipment
Cons
  • No S8 L option
  • Only available as a standard wheelbase

autoexpress[9]

Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
The 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 produces 563bhp and 800Nm of torque. The 8-speed auto handles this mostly smoothly, and with quattro four-wheel drive the chunky 2,305kg S8 will sprint from 0-62mph in 3.8 seconds. In the UK, the S8 is only available in short-wheelbase form – there's no L version.

Pros
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Excellent tech and quality
Cons
  • Lack of refinement
  • No L version

carmagazine[10]

Reviewers from carmagazine have found the following***:
The new A8 comes in standard- and long-wheelbase forms, with orders opening in December 2021 ahead of UK deliveries early in 2022. The dashboard remains pretty much as it was. It's a sleek and polished affair with the latest version of Audi's Virtual Display and a haptic-touch sensitive screen and central infotainment screen. There are three digital screens facing the driver, but they're not particularly large or intuitive and are a long way behind Mercedes-Benz's brilliant set-up in the S-Class.

Pros
  • Powerful V8 engine
  • Impressive infotainment tech
Cons
  • Lacklustre ride quality

carmagazine[11]

Reviewers from carmagazine have found the following***:
Audi S8 is a brilliant, well-built, sports car. It sounds fantastic and handles like a much smaller car due to a suspension system that crushes the laws of physics. The petrol V8, while not the full 592bhp seen in the new RS6 and RS7, is still stupendously powerful. It's addictively quick, with serious thrust that presents itself in a lazy, torquey kind of way.
Find the original article here.
Pros
  • Superb handling
  • Superb infotainment system
  • Powerful V8
Cons
  • Noisy on the motorway
  • Pricier than rivals

The Bluetooth performance is rock solid, reliable and oh-so sweet. The hypnotic guitars from Intro by The xx are delivered with great gusto. The jaunty French Navy from Camera Obscura is sure to get you swaying. Where the amp is less successful is with classical music.

Pros
  • Excellent sound quality
  • Excellent battery life
  • Excellent build quality
Cons
  • Lacklustre performance with classical music

Reviewers from theear have found the following***:
Woo's WA8 Eclipse headphone amplifier has an especially lush midrange. Human voice and acoustic instruments are intimately portrayed with rich, woody fundamentals and sweeping, elongated overtones. With two tubes, bass response is essentially linear down to 30Hz and gently begins to roll off below. Switching to 3-tube mode reveals an even more sumptuous side to Eclipse.

Pros
  • Gorgeous, open-back ambience
  • Impressive build quality
  • Excellent battery life
Cons
  • Expensive for what’s on offer

Cambridge Audio CXA81 sets a new baseline for thousand-pound integrated amps. Powerful and weighty in the low end, but lean and agile enough to dance around with the most excitable bass lines. Full-bodied and expressive midrange deals out melodies that are given space to soar, yet still sound definitively part of a musical whole.

Pros
  • Punchy, dynamic presentation
  • Excellent build quality
Cons
  • No phono input

Great when it's working
I had an earlier model A8 before. It was great when it was working, but the car just love going back to the dealers. The new one has more tech. I don't know if it's a good thing or not.
