The Sony XH95/X950H isn't perfect, but it is best-in-class at this price range. It combines barnstorming sound with pictures that, for the vast majority of the time, are truly things of beauty. It lacks a few features (especially when it comes to gaming) now starting to appear pretty routinely on rival flagship 4K TVs, and its backlighting occasionally makes its presence felt a little too strongly. But as we say, the latter is a trade off for the dazzling HDR peaks it can products, and if you're not worried about having all the latest gaming tricks, their absence won't bother you.

With Dolby Vision, HDR10 and HLG all supported, you should have plenty of options to choose from in terms of content. The addition of a second amplifier for the two top drivers on the back of the TV is an absolute game-changer. We recommend the Samsung TV for folks who are buying a TV for bright living rooms and who love bright, poppy images.

The XH95 delivers some of the most intense HDR images of any TV I have seen in 2020. Contrast feels like it’s been set to 11 (or more) with 4K HDR content dazzling in scope and intensity. Upscaling of both SD and HD content is excellent, with less blurring, artifacts or noise for what is a smooth all-round performance.

Sony's MotionFlow processing plays its part in the detailed but natural feel of the 65XH9505’s images. On its relatively low-powered settings it takes the edge off judder without either generating unwanted digital side effects or making movies look too smooth for comfort. The X-Balanced main speakers, meanwhile, live up to their billing by producing seriously impressive volume and bass.

The KD-49XH9505 replaces the XG9005 and is vastly better. Local dimming still isn't as sophisticated as that of top end backlit sets from Samsung. Gamers will be pleased to hear that input lag has been significantly improved. There's now support for Dolby Atmos as well as acoustic calibration.
