External Reviews
androidauthority[1]
Reviewer score 85% (normalized by Neofiliac)The Apple Watch has become many people's go-to fitness tracker. The watch measures your heart rate roughly once every 10 minutes, and there's an FDA-approved ECG that can alert you to potential heart conditions. With GPS on, you'll only manage around 4-6 hours, so it's cutting it fine for a marathon (but still not bad!).
Pros
- Beautiful design
- Excellent fitness tracking
- Great battery life
Cons
- No sleep tracking
- No third-party app support
arstechnica[2]
Reviewer score 80% (normalized by Neofiliac)The Apple Watch collects a vast amount of health data, and I simply wish Apple used it more productively. Activity Trends add to the value of the iOS app but currently not enough. Users will not even currently turn to the Activity app when they want to track their menstrual cycles because that feature lives in Apple's Health app.
Pros
- Always-on display is a great addition to the watchOS experience
- Accurate heart rate monitor
- Excellent battery life
Cons
- Not as intuitive as the Series 3
cnet[3]
Reviewer score 86% (normalized by Neofiliac)The always-on display is the only key new feature in the Apple Watch Series 5. You don't need that feature, but other than better battery life, it's the one thing I was looking for. The new watch faces in Apple's newest version of its watch software, WatchOS 6, are great.
Pros
- The always-on display is a great addition to the Apple Watch Series 5
- Better battery life than last year's Series 4
Cons
- Always-on mode dims the display
- No third-party watch faces
digitaltrends[4]
Reviewer score 90% (normalized by Neofiliac)Apple Watch Series 5 is the most fully rounded, feature-packed, everyday smartwatch you can wear. No other smartwatch comes close to offering the same level of fitness tracking, convenience, performance, or wearability. Apple Watch Series 4 owners don't really need to upgrade, but those who didn't buy the last one should jump on this one.
Pros
- Excellent fitness tracking
- Excellent battery life
- Easy to use
Cons
- Battery life could be better
- No sleep monitoring
notebookcheck[5]
Reviewer score 82% (normalized by Neofiliac)The Apple Watch Series 5 has two hardware buttons and responds to swiping gestures on its touchscreen. Force Touch makes a return too, while none of the buttons are freely configurable as is the case with other smartwatches. Apple preinstalls 10 watch dials, but you can add older ones like the Mickey Mouse-themed dial.
Pros
- Attractive design
- Good battery life
- Easy to use
Cons
- No eSIM option
- No web browser
pcmag[6]
Reviewer score 88% (normalized by Neofiliac)The Apple Watch Series 5 delivers excellent accuracy in the health and fitness department. Apple offers the widest selection of third-party apps of any smartwatch. Add in an unrivaled app experience and the always-on display, and the Series 5 is Apple's best smartwatch yet.
Pros
- Stylish design
- Always-on display
- Excellent battery life
- Accurate heart rate
Cons
- No ECG
- No GPS
phonearena[7]
Reviewer score 87% (normalized by Neofiliac)The Apple Watch Series 5 features an always-on screen that allows you to inconspicuously take a quick glance at the time. All else has remained the same: you still need to charge the watch every night. So is this the smartwatch you should buy? I have been using the Series 5 for a week now, and it's about time for our review. Read on.
Pros
- Always-on screen
- Very good battery life
- Very fast charging
Cons
- No always-on display
t3[8]
Reviewer score 93% (normalized by Neofiliac)The Apple Watch Series 5 has been forgotten about since the launch of the Series 6. But that doesn't mean it's not still an awesome bit of kit. It's capable of accurately tracking a host of workouts with ease. However, those who own an Apple Watch already, especially the Series 4, are unlikely to find anything compelling enough with the Series 5 to justify an upgrade.
Pros
- Beautiful design
- Always-on display
- Great battery life
Cons
- No compass support
- Average battery life
techadvisor[9]
Reviewer score 89% (normalized by Neofiliac)The Apple Watch Series 5 is the best smartwatch money can buy. It has an incredible screen, excellent app support, and the strongest set of sensors and features you'll find anywhere. The base version is just as good, functionally speaking, as any of the luxury ones. Apple has positioned its Watch as the ultimate fashion accessory for iPhone users.
Pros
- Incredible screen
- Excellent app support
- Excellent battery life
Cons
- No native sleep tracking
- No GPS
techradar[10]
Reviewer score 67% (normalized by Neofiliac)While there aren't any strong fitness upgrades with the Watch 5 (well, none at all, actually) it's still a great watch for those who are into exercising. The one thing that's missing from the mix is sleep tracking. If Apple could extend the battery life beyond the 18 hours it's advertising to something approaching 2-3 days, that could easily provide a more holistic view of your health.
Pros
- Accurate GPS
- Always-on display
Cons
- Battery life could be better
- No sleep tracking
tomsguide[11]
Reviewer score 92% (normalized by Neofiliac)You don't need a Series 5 to gain some of the best new Apple Watch features. Rival smartwatches from Samsung, Fitbit and Garmin offer multi-day battery life. Watch App Store is perhaps the most obvious game-changer, because you no longer need to install watch apps from your iPhone.
Pros
- Crisp display
- New battery life
- New cycle tracking app
Cons
- Battery life could be better
- No cellular connectivity
trustedreviews[12]
Reviewer score 88% (normalized by Neofiliac)WatchOS 6 launched alongside Apple Watch 5, coming pre-installed on the newest model. It's available for download for both the Apple Watch Series 4 and Series 3 (which now has a fantastic £199/$199) starting price. Apple said Series 1 and 2 watches will get the update towards the end of the year, while the Series 0 (aka the original Apple Watch) is no longer supported.
Pros
- Integrates with Apple’s services
- Excellent fitness features
- Excellent battery life
Cons
- Noise and Cycle Tracking can be fiddly to navigate
- No wireless charging
wired[13]
Reviewer score 84% (normalized by Neofiliac)Apple has taken low-temperature polysilicon oxide technology and integrated it into the Watch's OLED display. Apple claims this display is the first of its kind in the industry. Despite its always-on display, the Apple Watch Series 5 is supposed to have the same battery life as the generation before it.
Pros
- Fantastic battery life
- Always-on display is a great addition to Apple’s smartwatch ecosystem
Cons
- No built-in sleep tracking
- No third-party app support
