History
Mazda Motor Corporation is a Japanese multinational automaker that designs, develops, manufactures, and markets sedans, crossovers, and sports cars. Its Skyactive-X engine is the first commercial petrol engine to use compression ignition.
History
Founded in 1920 as Toyo Cork Kogyo (later Toyo Kogyo), the company did not manufacture automobiles until the 1930s. The company formally adopted the name "Mazda" in 1984, though every automobile sold from the beginning bore this name.
Since the 1960s, Mazda made a series of efforts in engineering Wankel rotary engines as a way of differentiating itself from other Japanese automakers.
The company was in long-term partnership with Ford between 1970s and 2015. It entered a new partnership with Toyota that year.
Current Engines
As Mazda currently focuses primarily on economy cars, it has streamlined its engine lineup to Inline-4-only under the SkyActiv brand:
- Skyactiv-G: direct injection petrol engines with high compression ratio (14:1 in gen 1 and 16:1 in gen 2)
- Skyactiv-D: turbo diesel engines
- Skyactiv-X: compression-ignition petrol engine
Mazda has unveiled a RX-Vision Concept powered by a new rotary engine, though it is unclear whether the current market condition allows it to be materialized.
