GM's Magnetic Ride Control (MagneRide) has been touted by enthusiasts as one of the best automotive suspension system on the market today. Now, General Motors is introducing the latest, 4th-gen MagneRide with 45% faster damping response on select 2020 and 2021 Cadillac models.

How Does It Work

Magnetic Ride Control is an active damping system that uses electromagnets with magnetorheological fluid inside the shock absorbers to vary the damping rate continually. The system works with wheel accelerometers to read the road up to 1000 times per second, change the magnetic charge in the fluid accordingly, and thereby continually and instantly change the shock's damping rate.
Vehicles equipped with MagneRide can respond to varying road surfaces, sharp turns, and sudden driver inputs better, improving traction and handling as well as ride comfort.
As opposed to traditional suspension systems, MagneRide has no mechanical valves or moving parts that can wear out.

New in MagneRide 4.0

GM has further improved the system in its 4th iteration. New wheel hub accelerometers collect, transmit, and process road information four times faster than their predecessors, while a new inertial measurement unit also provides additional information on the relative motion of the chassis relative to the wheels for more accurate readings.
New secondary temperature maps allow the adjustments to adapt to weather conditions better. Other hardware improvements include new magnetic flux control, significant reduction in damper friction, and a new formula for the magnetorheological fluid, contributing to more precise adjustments.
