Product Overview

Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class C118 is a compact sedan in production from 2019. It is available with a range of inline-4 engines that displaced 1.3 to 2.0 liters.
Essentially a hunchback sedan variant of the W177 A-Class hatchback, the C118 CLA is rather ugly from all but the front. The front of this car now looks like just about every other Mercedes, including models that sell for 3x the price.
The Mercedes-Benz CLA Coupe C118 is limited to inline-4, which just a decade ago would be considered inadequate but which is what most have to live with today, thanks to regulations.
Engineers at Mercedes-Benz clearly made a great effort in aerodynamics, with a class-leading 0.24 coefficient of drag to show for it.
Drivers who appreciate handling should keep in mind that the Mercedes-Benz CLA Coupe uses MacPherson front suspension, which doesn't provide the best cornering performance.

autocar[1]

Sentiment Score 66%
Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
The new Mercedes-Benz CLA is not: an A-Class in drag. It sits on the same platform as Mercedes' latest hatchback and uses the same engines, gearboxes and many other systems. Five petrol-powered CLA variants will come to the UK this summer, all available to order now. All have a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox (although a manual is coming later)

Pros
  • Class-leading practicality
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Good-looking interior
Cons
  • No automatic gearbox
  • Lacklustre infotainment system

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
The attractive CLA 250 has a track 63mm wider at the front than its predecessor and 55mm at the rear, and has also grown 48mm in length. It adds a sporting purpose to its appearance that is matched by its performance out on the road, particularly when it comes to corners. The 2-litre in line four offers 224bhp and only pulls the car from 0 to 62mph in 6.3sec – but it feels faster than that sounds.

Pros
  • Powerful engine
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • Not for everyone
  • Lack of practicality

Sentiment Score 67%
Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
The Mercedes CLA is the most stylish member of the Mercedes A-Class family. It’s also the best to drive and shares the same beautifully built and tech-laded interior. The downsides are limited practicality and high prices once you’ve added a few must-have options.

Pros
  • Gorgeous, tech-laden interior
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • Less practical than A-Class hatchback

autoexpress[4]

Sentiment Score 73%
Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
The latest Mercedes CLA is so much more than a rebodied A-Class hatch. Its wider track means it's genuinely engaging to drive, while its achingly cool design should turn plenty of heads in the company car park. Available only in AMG Line trim, this new four-door coupé is expensive, but its glorious interior and mini-CLS shape more than make up for any shortcomings in practicality.

As with the previous model, the CLA aims to be the trendiest member of Merc's small car family. While it shares its wheelbase with the A-Class, it's longer overall – 4,688mm to the Saloon's 4,549mm. The 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine seems rather out of place in a Mercedes. It's hampered by a seven-speed dual clutch gearbox which is slow to kick down and surges on upshifts.

Pros
  • Sleek looks
  • Decent infotainment system
Cons
  • Lacklustre petrol engine
  • Lack of practicality

The Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 S is a hugely talented and desirable piece of kit, albeit one that doesn't come cheap. Choosing it over the A 45 S ultimately comes down to whether you prefer the way it looks, but its performance, useability and agility put it ahead of the Audi RS 3 saloon.

Pros
  • Powerful four-cylinder engine
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • More expensive than the A 45

Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
The Mercedes CLA rounds off the wider A-Class line-up as a stylish four-door coupe or Shooting Brake estate. The CLA 35 is more expensive and slightly better-equipped as standard than its A 35 counterpart. The 306bhp 2.0-litre engine is just as effective as in other applications – the CLA 35 feels hugely quick in everyday driving.

Pros
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Fantastic infotainment system
Cons
  • Lack of standard equipment

Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
Based on the A 45 hatchback, the latest CLA 45 is a more flowing shape than its predecessor, looking not unlike a shrunken CLS. Clean lines and a swooping roofline go some way to justifying the coupe tag. The car seen here has the Plus trimmings, with more aggressive front and rear splitters, a larger rear spoiler and dive planes at the edges of the front bumper.

Pros
  • Powerful V8
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • Sloping roofline
  • Expensive compared to rivals

Reviewers from carmagazine have found the following***:
Mercedes is very good at this stuff, but some of it feels gimmicky and unnecessary, and even distracting. AMG Line Premium you get a bigger instrument display, augmented-reality sat-nav, a dash cam, ambient lighting with a choice of 64 colours, and a rear armrest. Extra money buys satnav with augmented reality which activates a front camera on the approach to turn-offs, roundabouts and crossroads.

Pros
  • Comfortable, well-built cabin
  • Comfortable and well equipped
  • Excellent infotainment system
Cons
  • Lacklustre tech
  • Expensive for what it offers
