Product Overview

Toyota RAV4 Mk5 is a compact crossover in production from 2018. It is available with a range of inline-4 engines that displaced 2.0 to 2.5 liters.
Compared to its predecessor, the Mk5 RAV4 is slightly less ugly but it has very little notable mechanical changes. It remains a compelling choice for those who want to save fuel but does so without inspiring any emotions.
Those who drive offroad, for work or leisure, will appreciate the approach, departure, and breakover angles that the chassis offers.

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
The Toyota RAV4 is a good-looking, comfortable and usefully sure-footed SUV. Central to this powertrain is a 2.5-litre, naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine. In our front-wheel-drive test car, this was paired with a CVT and an electric motor for a combined system output of 215bhp. The infotainment suite is pretty rubbish, and unless you’re a fan of puzzles and retro graphics, I’d hazard a guess you won’t exactly warm to it.

Pros
  • Powerful hybrid powertrain
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • Fiddly infotainment
  • No Apple CarPlay or Android Auto compatibility

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
Toyota claims a WLTP-certified range of 46 miles, while a full charge can be delivered in 2.5 hours from a dedicated wallbox. The petrol engine now develops 182bhp instead of 176bhp; and the front electric motor’s output has been upped from the 118bhp figure it makes in the regular RAV4 Hybrid, to 180bhp here. Toyota claims a 0-62mph time of 10sec when running on battery power, and performance is brisk enough to keep pace with the traffic.

Pros
  • Powerful petrol engine
  • Impressive range
  • Decent electric range
Cons
  • Pricier than rivals

The Toyota RAV4 PHEV is kind of car that might reaffirm your faith in the idea of the plug-in hybrid car. With a really useful electric range and good underlying fuel efficiency, it delivers on the potential of the technology in a way in which rivals, for different reasons, can struggle and fail to do. It has surprisingly strong performance, decent drivability, and an all-round freedom from any practicality compromises.

Pros
  • Decent electric range
  • Decent drivability
Cons
  • Pricier than alternatives

The latest Toyota RAV4 represents a welcome step forwards over the old model. It's still very well-built and likely to be solidly reliable. However, it lags behind key rivals in the infotainment stakes and the limited engine range may put off some. It drives neatly and rides very well, but many cheaper rivals offer a similar breadth of ability.

Pros
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Stylish styling
Cons
  • Lags behind rivals in infotainment
  • Limited engine range

An extra £2,240 buys a second electric motor to drive the rear wheels. The total system output stands at 215bhp for the front-driven model. It's just a shame that, as with many previous hybrid Toyotas, the noise is so unpleasant. The engine is hooked up to a CVT gearbox which causes a monotone drone from the engine when it's either cold or under load.

Pros
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Decent infotainment system
Cons
  • No Apple CarPlay or Android Auto compatibility

Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
A large 18.1kWh battery is located beneath the rear seats, while the front motor is rated at 134kW (176bhp) Toyota claims up to 46 miles of pure-electric running is possible, and we managed 35 silent miles with no real effort. The car is extremely smooth, and on electric power alone it's certainly fast enough for day-to-day life. The only flaw in this otherwise spookily smooth and silent package is exposed when you tap into the recharge mode.

Pros
  • Powerful engine
  • Impressive range
  • Decent ride quality
Cons
  • Lack of infotainment
  • Poor battery life

Our man gets the lowdown on the plug-in hybrid Toyota RAV4 at the dealership. The 46-mile range takes a charge time of 2.5 hours using the 7.5kWh fast charge cable. The car boasts 305bhp of AWD power with a sub-six-second 0-60mph time.

Pros
  • Excellent fuel economy
  • Easy to drive
  • Good range
Cons
  • Not as quiet as rivals

carmagazine[8]

Reviewers from carmagazine have found the following***:
The RAV4 feels airy and light up front, with ample rear leg and headroom even with the driver and passenger seats pushed reasonably far back. The small central tunnel running through the car also means that – even on four-wheel drive models – there's plenty of legroom for middle seat passengers. Apple CarPlay is standard with the 8.0-inch Touch 2 infotainment system, which also features nine speakers as part of the JBL 800W sound system.

Pros
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Excellent infotainment system
Cons
  • Lacks smartphone integration
  • Lack of safety tech

Toyota has been at the forefront when it comes to democratizing its safety systems. Front-wheel drive is standard on the RAV4, but my Adventure trim packs an all-wheel-drive system. Toyota's Entune 3.0 system features more capability than prior versions.

Pros
  • Excellent on-road performance
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Decent infotainment tech
Cons
  • Lack of powertrain refinement

For the most part, I really like what Toyota has done with the RAV4's interior. Front seats are comfortable and there are plenty of soft plastics and storage cubbies. The interior materials are nice, but the infotainment tech is just OK. With the aft backrest up, you get a claimed 37.5 cubic feet of junk-hauling capacity.

Pros
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Excellent infotainment tech
  • Lots of cargo space
Cons
  • Mediocre performance
  • Lackluster interior tech

The RAV4 Prime takes 12 hours to charge its 18.1-kWh battery on a standard household plug. The interior materials are great but the infotainment tech could use an upgrade. With the rear seats up the Prime has 33.5 cubic feet of space; with them down, that expands to 63.2 cubes.

Pros
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Powerful gas engine
  • Good range
Cons
  • Lackluster infotainment tech
  • Lack of cargo space

As in other Toyotas, the RAV4's back-up camera is poor, providing a low-resolution image of what's behind you. This Toyota's four-cylinder engine works surprisingly well, even if it's a bit noisy while working. This SUV's backseat is also spacious, with plenty of room for knees and noggins.

Pros
  • Powerful four-cylinder engine
  • Comfortable ride
Cons
  • Lackluster infotainment system
  • Poor back-up camera

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is now standard across all trims. Toyota backs every RAV4 with a standard warranty of 36 months or 36,000 miles.

Pros
  • Fun to drive
  • Good fuel economy
  • Good standard equipment
Cons
  • Expensive compared to rivals

digitaltrends[14]

The RAV4 Prime proves that power doesn't have to come at the cost of efficiency. Toyota quotes 42 miles of electric range, with an efficiency rating of 94 MPGe. With the standard 3.3-kilowatt onboard charger, a full charge takes 12 hours. The Prime beats the Ford Escape and Mitsubishi Outlander on electric range.

Pros
  • Powerful diesel engine
  • Excellent fuel economy
  • Powerful 3.3-kilowatt onboard charger
Cons
  • No DC fast charging
  • Lack of safety features

For $38,294, you can enjoy the comfortable leather seats, a digital and analog instrument cluster, a Qi wireless charging pad, and USB chargers in the front and back. The second row offers enough leg and headroom for large adults, and it has AC vents, but no climate control. The Toyota RAV4 is a great size for city life because it is not too large.

Pros
  • Comfortable ride
  • Excellent infotainment system
  • Good fuel economy
Cons
  • Lack of Android Auto
  • No automatic high beams

The 2020 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid's battery-assisted powertrain has 16 more horsepower than its non-hybrid sibling. Even with this extra power, EPA-estimated fuel economy is up to 39mpg combined. The XSE trim's sport-tuned suspension handles curves with minimal body roll and smooths out small bumps.

Pros
  • Sleek, sporty styling
  • Excellent fuel economy
  • Powerful JBL audio system
Cons
  • Slightly kludgy steering wheel controls
  • Lacks Android Auto

The fifth-generation Prime continues to steal the spotlight with its sporty handling and bold exterior lines. The view from the vehicle is expansive, but sitting inside, a taller passenger may feel a bit squeezed. Despite having 11% less space with up to 63.2 cubic feet of cargo space, there is plenty of storage available in multiple compartments.

Pros
  • Class-leading electric-only range
  • Sleek, sporty interior
