Product Overview

BMW X5 G05 is a mid-size crossover in production from 2018. It is available with a range of inline-4, inline-6, and V8 engines that displaced 2.0 to 4.4 liters.
Compared to its predecessor, the G05 X5 has a more athletic styling. For the Chinese market, BMW even introduced an LWB variant with more bling.
The most interesting powertrain option is perhaps the quad-turbo B57 diesel engine found in the M50d, which was shortly discontinued.
Those who drive offroad, for work or leisure, will appreciate the extraordinary approach, departure, and breakover angles that the chassis offers. The official fuel economy rating is exceptionally rosy, though it may cast more doubts on the trustworthiness of the regulators and perhaps the owner's own sanity than it relates to reality.
Drivers who appreciate handling will be pleased to know that the BMW X5 (G05) comes with double-wishbone at the front and multi-link at the rear. Combined with RWD, this setup provides one of the best handling characteristics and tuning capabilities.

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
The M50d is the only X5 in the new range to come on adaptively damped steel coil suspension as standard rather than on air spheres. The car’s steering response hardly seems to soften at all as it begins to roll, almost imperceptibly, through a direction change. Looming 22in alloy wheels come as standard too, and they do thump and thud a bit over sharp edges.

Pros
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Decent standard equipment
Cons
  • Punchy on the road
  • Noisy in Sport mode

The X5 xDrive45e represents a significant advance over the older X5 XDrive40e. It not only delivers greater power, performance and electric range but also vastly improved levels of refinement. The petrol engine and electric motor are terrifically well integrated, to the extent that you’re scarcely aware what power source is doing the work in low-speed urban driving conditions.

Pros
  • High-quality materials
  • Powerful electric motor
  • Excellent infotainment system
Cons
  • Cheap to drive
  • Lack of feel

BMW has delivered more of a driver's X5. It's very capable off-road, a mix of high torque, versatile suspension and trick algorithms likely to keep you moving along most tracks. Mildly disappointing are the big 20in wheels’ pothole assaults (these are single chamber air springs, rather than the more absorbent multi-chamber variety)

Pros
  • Excellent off-road performance
  • Excellent infotainment system
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • Big 20in wheels
  • Pothole assaults

The X5 xDrive 45e M Sport comes with adaptive air suspension, 20in alloy wheels and runflat tyres as standard, with BMW’s Integral Active four-wheel steering system as an option. Optional wheel size runs all the way to 22in if you have the M Sport Plus package – and, yes, you can have the big rims without disqualifying the car from that low tax classification.

Pros
  • Impressive fuel economy
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Decent handling
Cons
  • Lack of torque at high revs

Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
The X5's exterior design is bullish and modern, while the inside is extremely luxurious and signals a new era for the German manufacturer. There aren't many engines to choose from in the line-up, but each returns a commendable amount of performance without trampling over fuel efficiency. The new Off Road package gives a new dynamic to the X5 too, although the car's focus remains on the road rather than off it.

Pros
  • Gorgeous interior
  • Fantastic infotainment system
Cons
  • Not the most exciting to drive
  • Only one body style available

The all-new X5 boasts a completely overhauled interior, with a beautifully crafted dashboard and slick 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel engine packs enough shove (0-62mph takes 6.5 seconds) for effortless overtakes. Up to 80 per cent of British buyers will opt for the M Sport car, however.

Pros
  • Superb handling
  • Excellent infotainment system
Cons
  • Lack of Android Auto

The new BMW will be most popular in xDrive 30d form, with diesel sales set to remain strong, but the latest X5 family will eventually grow into a diverse bunch. Petrol options are available at launch and a full-blooded X5 M is due in 2020, but right now, the M50d version driven here takes its place right at the top of the model ladder.

Pros
  • Powerful V8 engine
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Lots of standard equipment
Cons
  • Lack of infotainment tech

The new plug-in X5 feels much like the regular SUV on the move. There are various drive modes you can select via a new switch next to the gear lever, ranging from full EV to Hybrid or Sport. Inside, the X5 xDrive45e feels luxurious and spacious, even though it's only available in five-seat configuration. Its boot is compromised ever-so-slightly by the electric gubbins, but only by a few litres.

Pros
  • Superb electric powertrain

Cons

  • Alternatives offer more range

Cons

All X5s are very well equipped, the entry-level X5 xLine having 19-inch wheels. Buy an X5 M Sport and you'll get 20in alloys instead, black exterior trim instead of chrome, a black headlining and run-flat tyres. Boot space is impressive at 645 litres seats-up; drop them (they split 40/20/40) and this jumps to 1,860 litres. Towing varies significantly depending on which engine is fitted.

Pros
  • Class-leading infotainment system
  • Excellent cabin space

Cons

  • Short battery life

The BMW X5 xDrive45e plug-in hybrid is a surprise hit. It takes a slightly different approach to BMW SUVs of old. The iDrive infotainment system is the best in the business. And the build quality inside is hugely impressive. But it's not the ultimate driving machine.

The 2019 BMW X5 has a 3.0-liter turbocharged I6 gas engine, good for 335 horsepower. The eight-speed automatic works well in conjunction with this engine, shuffling through the gears smoothly. The steering is direct and responsive, aligning itself with some of the sportier SUVs in the segment.

Pros

  • Comfortable ride

Cons
  • Expensive for what you get
  • Lack of standard equipment

The new X5 xDrive50i looks really sharp. M Sport touches make the X5 look slightly meaner. The X5 offers 72.3 cubic feet of space with the rear seats folded. BMW's latest iDrive interface looks great on the 12.3-inch center touchscreen.

Pros
  • Powerful V8 engine
  • High-quality interior
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • M Sport trim is a bit pricey

The 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 puts out 523 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. The Adaptive M suspension means this SUV can go from super stiff to totally cushy. A Wi-Fi hotspot and wireless charging are both standard on the X5 M50i.

Pros

Cons
  • Expensive for what you get

Reviewers from cnet have found the following***:
The X5 is a very comfortable, if starkly designed, place to spend day-to-day life. It might be slightly smaller inside than some competitors, but with its good-road manners and tech, it's one of the best luxury cars you can buy. The X5 45e comes with plenty of standard driver-assistance features.

Pros
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Lots of standard driver-assistance tech
  • Comfortable seats
Cons
  • Lackluster ride quality

digitaltrends[16]

Reviewers from digitaltrends have found the following***:
The all-wheel-drive X5 xDrive45e is ready for daily jaunts around town and inclement weather. The M Sport package at $5,500 is too rich for our blood, but we’d definitely throw in the $350 heated seats and $250 heated steering wheel. In the very back, the X5 sits in the middle between competitors from Volvo, Mercedes, and Audi.

Pros
  • Excellent infotainment system
  • Powerful electric motor
  • Easy to use
Cons
  • Lacks Android Auto
  • No third row option
