Product Overview

Kia K5 / Optima 4 Sportswagon (chassis code JF) is a mid-size station wagon in production from 2016 to 2020. It was available with a range of inline-4 engines that displaced 1.6 to 2.4 liters.
On the one hand, Kia really upped the game in the design of the Mk4 K5 / Optima. On the other hand, the vehicle is really limited by the displacements in its tiny little engines. Even with new and quick-shifting automatic and DCT transmissions, it doesn't provide the smooth experience that a large naturally-aspirated engine delivers effortlessly.
Kia has made a good effort in aerodynamics, with a decent 0.28 coefficient of drag to show for it. The official fuel economy rating is exceptionally rosy, though it may cast more doubts on the trustworthiness of the regulators and perhaps the owner's own sanity than it relates to reality.

Reviewer score 48%
Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
The Optima SW’s smart styling is complemented by a cabin that largely looks and feels as plush as it needs to at this price point. Four tall adults can sit in decent comfort, and while the 552-litre boot pales in comparison to the vast chasm at the rear of a Skoda Superb estate, it's still plenty big enough for general family use. It's at its best on A-roads or motorways, where the ride is as well-isolating as the best in this class and noise levels are commendably low.

Pros
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Decent ride quality
Cons
  • Ridiculous infotainment system
  • Lacklustre handling

Reviewer score 74%
Reviewers from carmagazine have found the following***:
For style and substance though you'll want the Kia Optima Sportswagon GT. It features a new four-pot 2.0-litre turbocharged engine that punches out 242bhp and 260lb ft. Grip levels are high and the steering system offers up satisfying weight and easily judged responses. Automatic versions are a bit less taxing to drive in traffic but the six-speed 'box carries only a small ease-of-use penalty.

Pros
  • More fun to drive than a saloon
  • Lots of standard equipment
Cons
  • More expensive than the saloon
