Product Overview

Mercedes-Benz C-class W205 is a compact executive sedan in production from 2014 to 2018, whereupon it received a facelift. It was available with a range of inline-4, V6, and V8 engines that displaced 1.6 to 4.0 liters.

Unfortunately, with accelerated anti-car movement, Mercedes further downsized the engine lineup for the W205 and threw in lots of electronics gadgets. To compensate for this, 4MATIC AWD systems became often the only choice with not-so-small engine options.

The last bit of light could be found in the M177 4.0L hot-vee V8TT engine found in the C 63 and C 63 S AMG models. Luckily, these vehicles remained RWD. They were also spared from the "upgrade" to 9G-TRONIC 9-speed automatic transmission, which was rolled out in 2016. That said, the 9G-TRONIC is hardly a let-down, since the 7G-TRONIC had nagging issues with shift quality and long-term reliability throughout its production run, and the 9-speed unit has proven to be non-the-worse.

Among the non-AMG engines, the only V6 left also got a tiny "AMG" badge, but one would have to fool oneself to compare it with the real V8 AMG model. The I4 engine lineup is uninspiring and frankly designed for the fleet market (rental or company cars).

Mercedes-Benz has made a good effort in aerodynamics, with a decent 0.27 coefficient of drag to show for it. The official fuel economy rating is exceptionally rosy, though it may cast more doubts on the trustworthiness of the regulators and perhaps the owner's own sanity than it relates to reality.

Drivers who appreciate handling will be pleased to know that the W205 comes with double-wishbone front and multi-link rear suspensions.
