Product Overview

Audi A8 D2 (Typ 4D) facelift is a full-size luxury sedan in production from 1999 to 2002. It was available with a range of V6, V8, and W12 engines that displaced 2.5 to 6.0 liters.
Compared to the pre-facelift model, Audi added a couple of chrome stripes on above the front and rear bumpers to tie the entire design together much better. Indeed, this is arguably the best-looking sedan to have ever come out of Audi's production lines. Audi also introduced a LWB variant with 5 inches of additional wheelbase for the rear seat passengers.
All engines received marginal increase in power output, though the most notable addition was the naturally-aspirated 6-liter W12 engine. This unit is essentially two VW VR6 engines joined at the crank. It allowed Audi to fit a 12-cyclinder engine into the already cramped engine bay (thanks to Audi's insistence on symmetric AWD + transaxle) designed barely enough for a V8. Variations of this engine still powers the entire Bentley lineup to this day.
A bit of good news is that by 2001 ZF introduced a new part for the known weak point of its 5HP24A automatic transmission, the Clutch A drum. Still, these transmissions served in severe duty in Audi's transaxle setup with only a small oil cooler. Together with the inherent weak design, these automatic transmissions do not last without rebuilds, which unfortunately also necessitates rebuilding the front- and center- differentials at the same time.
Audi has made a good effort in aerodynamics, with a decent 0.28 coefficient of drag to show for it. The use of "Audi Space Frame" made this vehicle rust-proof, which was in stark contrast to some of the rust buckets that Merc was pushing out at the time.
Drivers who appreciate handling will be pleased to know that the D2 A8 comes with multi-link suspensions at all four corners. This provides the best cornering performance and tunability, at the expense of cost and a little bit of durability.
