Product Overview

Sony FE 85mm F1.4 GM is a large-aperture short telephoto prime lens for Sony E-mount. It covers the full-frame image circle. Introduced by Sony in 2016, it has 11 elements in 8 groups.
For incremental weathers, Sony is kind enough to include weather sealing. On the lens barrel, one can find a physical aperture ring. Those who wish to focus manually can have the best of both worlds (with the usual caveats).
A telephoto prime lens, the Sony FE 85mm F1.4 GM is well suited for portrait photography.

cameralabs[1]

Reviewer score 78% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from cameralabs have found:
Sony's FE 85mm f1.4 GM is a high-end prime lens for its mirrorless cameras. The short telephoto focal length makes it ideal for portraits and the de-clickable aperture ring also makes it great for video work. It is one of Sony's first G-Master, or GM, lenses, boasting the company's best optical quality to date.
Pros
  • Long telephoto focal length and f1.4 focal ratio
  • De-clickable aperture ring
  • Dust and splash protection
Cons
  • High price
  • No aperture ring

digitalpicture[2]

Reviewer score 82% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from digitalpicture have found:
Sony's 11-blade aperture is unique for this class of lenses, with most having 9-blades. At f/2, the Sony appears somewhat sharper, but it has more moiré. The Sony shows less vignetting in the same wide aperture comparisons and the Tamron has a touch less linear distortion.
Pros
  • Excellent f/2.8 aperture
  • Competitively priced
  • In-lens vibration control
Cons
  • Limited focus ring rotations
  • No manual aperture option
