Product Overview

Sony FE 100mm F2.8 STF GM OSS is a short telephoto prime lens for Sony E-mount. It covers the full-frame image circle. Introduced by Sony in 2017, it has 14 elements in 10 groups.
For incremental weathers, Sony is kind enough to include weather sealing. On the lens barrel, one can find a physical aperture ring. Those who wish to focus manually can have the best of both worlds (with the usual caveats).
The Sony FE 100mm F2.8 STF GM OSS is specifically designed for portrait photography. Built-in image stabilization makes the lens easier to use handheld, and can be quite valuable for handheld works. It is needed, because the f/2.8 lens only transmits like a f/5.6 one due to STF.

Cons
  • Relatively high price tag

sonyalpha[2]

Reviewer score 89% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from sonyalpha have found:
The Sony FE 100mm STF is without a doubt the best portrait lens available whatever brand, the bokeh is marvelous with a lot of smoothness Compared to a F1.4 lens you get even more blurry background while having much more depth of field for you subject in focus thanks to the F2.8 aperture. This give a stronger 3D pop up effect. But it requires enormous light, the apodization filter is eating enormous light : ISO are climbing very fast.
Pros
  • Bokeh and background blur are the smoothest I have ever seen, while sharpness is excellent Color rendition is also excellent
  • Very fast and quiet
  • AF of the Sony is a key plus for portrait shooting, eye AF will work so a much better accuracy proxyphotogr...
Cons
  • The Sony has a lower T-stop (T5.6 instead of T3.2 for the Laowa) which requires to have much more light than the Deowa and force to increase ISO the price :The Sony is costing 2x the 2 STF available on E mount
